I want to ask a serious question. I was discussing this with a friend at work, and wanted some minority views. How is it not racist for you to have groups that only allow your race in them, but it's racist for whites to form their own groups where only whites can be in? Is that not a double standard? Like, colleges that only allow blacks and turn whites away. If white people did that, you'd be all over it right? But it's ok for you to do it to whites? Is that really fair? Please don't get all defensive. I'm trying to be more understanding of how you see things.

It's political correctness run amok- and it's all bullsh*t.. this racism junk has GOT to be stopped... all of it makes me sick... the sins of the past don't justify bullsh*t in the present or future.

This is the reality we live in.We have to make the best of it.

Personally I hang out with all races, because since I been it school it's been like that.I can never see my self just hanging with one race,it feels weird to me,so I just don't do it.Some of my friends think this too.

Try ur best to not let it borther u,because it's just gonna cause a backlash.

Peace!

I'm just trying to agree with you. It's the same politically too. Blacks can have the NAACP but white people who belong to or start a political organization to promote rights for white people are considered bigots and racist and most of the time called neo-nazis even when they don't identify with Nazi parties at all. (No I don't mean the KKK I'm talking about non-militant groups)

Question Asker Thats not something I can help or change. Racism NOW is something we CAN help and we CAN change. - 7 months ago
iLuhvK0tt0nKandii It doesn't matter. You have to look at things the way African Americans were brought up, starting from slavery. This is not something we made it; this is how the white community wanted it! (Not you specifically, but your ancestors). So don't knock us for excluding whites out of specific groups etc. Because we have been excluding from things majority of our existence. If you feel some type of way, I doubt its anything of what our ancestors felt! BTW No I'm not a racist, I have love for everyone! - 5 months ago

Of course it goes both way but we pretend this isn't the case because we want to pretend that prejudice is simple a character defect in white men than a characteristic of humans in general. It is much harder to justify special treatment for a group of people that evidence the same character flaws that were oppressing them.
Spike Lee solemnly intones that minority members cannot be racists. He is not only wrong, he does equality a great disservice. Whenever a lot of people are vying for control of limited resources, you will see discrimination based on subgroup membership.

Racism is granting special advantages to a member of a group of people based on membership in that group. We don't solve the problem by simply switching the target of the discrimination.

regular-guy I was in a college class once that defined racism as something that white people do against non-whites. My paraphrase is rough, but that was the general idea. Nobody said anything because we did not want to cause unnecessary contention, and I am sure some people were afraid of being labeled as insensitive, bigots, or even racists. I was personally offended though. - 4 months ago

You're applying an event that happens in many different groups and making it a racial issue. We delineate many different groups according to different criteria, not just race. For example, women only gyms exist for women who do not want to workout with guys around. I suppose a guy could make an issue out of this because it's being dicriminatory, but why would he unless he's trying to play some discrimination card.

Why would a white person want to belong to a black group anyway? There's little if any basis for commonality. Groups exist for common interests, such as the women only gym.

I think that your issue has more to do with not being allowed to be a part a the group rather than actually wanting to be a part of the group.

tommyboy69 All I know is Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and the NAACP would shit a brick if they turned on the tv and saw a WET channel. Anyone having anything to do with that station would be a racist. However BET is okie-dokie these days........ - 9 months ago
missnicole Theres a joke that every channel is WET... ;) There are plenty of shows and programming that have an all white cast...perhaps with the token black person...and that's okay. But an all black cast..? That's a black show. Funny eh? No not really. But yeah, that's why there is BET... There weren't always so many black people on prime time tv...Unless they were on welfare and lived in the hood. The Huxtibles was like fantasy tv! You're over 45 (so it says) I'm sure you know that... - 9 months ago
missnicole Oh...so yeah, instead of shitting bricks...BET was created. - 9 months ago

Racism is part of the human being. I think that in this case blacks are racists but they give you a reason. It's like the jews, who some of them are racists with almost all the people who are not jews because of what their ancestors suffer. The only thing to do is to not give a very importance to the past and get along with the others.

The thing that bites me is that you hear slangs or words that despect other races except the white race. Why it can be?

I could go on out racism.
My mother who's Asian married my Dad who's White, anyways obviously they both had to overcome some differences. actually both families on both my parent's side have people who are racists which well it just exists.
It certainly is not acceptable and there has to e evidence. Sometimes Racism is quite subtle these days and it sickens me.
I think that in general when you learn more about other cultures, you are more open to accept.

I don't know why some white people fake like they didn't give blacks a hard time! If you want change so bad then you would make a valid effort to change things. Obviously things have gotten much better. Thank God! Being that slavery was only a few hundred years ago. You have blacks and whites who get along just fine, and you have those who are still set in their ways.

Question Asker Um, I didn't give blacks a hard time. And guess what? Neither did my ancestors. My ancestors were TORTURED by the Nazi's. I am second generation born American. So, my family has absolutely NOTHING to do with slavery. Maybe blacks should quite throwing every single white into the category that we ALL had a part in slavery. Many of us didn't. Nor is it something that we can change today. It's all done and over with. - 5 months ago

Anon below me, and AJtogo are spot on. There are no schools that will turn away someone based on race...even historically black schools..so what you heard there is a rumour. As for black groups, they were formed in reaction, as a support group in a time when the support was severely needed...To have the idea that blacks (or any other minority) have always had the same type of opportunities as whites, so have no need for group support is a bit silly.

We've come a long way...not just blacks, but all minorities... without these groups and organizations pushing for equal treatment and offering paths of advancement we'd still be getting the shaft... While racism isn't nearly as strong as it used to be, it still exists... While there are still prejudice and stereotypes, as well as attitudes within the black (or other minority) communities that they are not as good as/dont have the same chances as/etc... then the need for groups to offer support still exists.

As for scholarships...theres a scholarship for *everything* have you seen the list?! Its been awhile, but I remember seeing schoarships for everything from African-Americans, Irish, Germans, Sisters of the Confederacy, Tall people, people who speak french, italian, tagalog, people who have lived in some certain region, people who play certain sports, scholarships for people who play video games..dang...think of it..it exists. Any white person who feels they are not getting enough opportunity and need to form thier own group is really lost...

And yeah, I hugely agree that it has more to do with not being allowed to be considered part of a group than actually wanting to be in it. There are hundreds of groups where anyone can get in where they fit in, no matter the race, background or skills...why choose to single out specific groups that one doesn't fit into to be a part of?

HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) allow whites. As a matter of fact, in some places whites can get in with affirmative action.

Many minority groups were started because they were excluded by whites so it doesn't make sense for whites to form their own groups against the minority groups which were only formed as a reaction.

tommyboy69 Formed as a reaction, maybe, but why are they still around now a days? There is no segrigation anymore, so why keep any group that IS or WAS based on race? I personally don't have a problem with race based groups. Birds of a feather..... but if its allowed for one race, it shouldnt be viewed as racism for another. That in itself is racism - 9 months ago
iLuhvK0tt0nKandii They're still around because at one time African Americans weren't allowed to go to college. They're called Black colleges because they were built for African American students who wanted to go to college, it wasn't like they were allowed in the "White Colleges". Therefore it is a historical college... so it will always remain! We don't erase History! - 5 months ago

Yep I know exactly what you mean. It's like that in England-if a white person says anything about a black person (especially if that person is in the media) then there is an uproar but if it is the other way round you never hear about it. All you ever hear about in the media in England is white people being racist about black people. You never see or hear about black people being racist about white people. Is that because it never happens? Is it f***, it's because white people are jumped on for it and black people are let off. For some reason, it seems ok for black people to be racist but not for white people. Very strange. I don't agree with any racism btw but I just think its amazing how I have never once heard in the papers anything about black people being racist to white people.
