No one needs to be treated like that. He can say he loves you all he wants, but those are just words which he's not living up to. Tell him he needs to show it and not just act nice when no one is around to see. If he can't or won't, then he should remain your ex.

Maybe you need to find a guy who can accept you in public or private because maybe he's humiliated that he is dating you.
