You need to talk to him. It is childish to ignore his phone calls. He was trying to be honest with you about how he feels. Listen to what he has to say. Tell him how you feel also. If he still wants space, give it to him. Space is good for relationships sometimes.
Yes, being distant will make him realize how great his life was with you in it, and how bad it is without you. You should answer the next time he calls thought, but keep some distance at first. See if he has come to his senses, though!
