He just misses you or can't get rid of that lil habit he's use to. In some ways there's feelings possibly but then in some cases he's just calling you as to keep himself from being lonely until he finds someone he's looking for.
It depends on the time you both spent together but mostly they call because they're still used to whatever you guys used to do when you were together...it takes some time to forget all of it.

Definitely some place relaxing, but noting too distracting. a casual place to eat sounds nice, maybe a park or something afterwards. I like being able to look into someone's eyes, and then walking would give me a chance to talk. I'd end the first date light, simple hug is fine.
