how come that when a guy breaks up with you he will say he wants to stay friends but treats you like shit which leaves you wondering whether you actually ever knew that person? my ex broke up with me saying he wanted to be friends, did many bad things, but always said he hoped we could be friends, he said it more than once. even now, months afterwards, after he finally realised how much he hurt me, he says its a shame we can't be friends. but why did he act then like a complete idiot? I mean if you want to remain friends, then you don't go on hurting them unnecessarily, right? and why would he even like to stay friends with me when he didn't trust me, thought I was a cheat and basically wasnt happy for a long time with me? I didn't cheat, but if he thinks so, why would he still like to be friends, because I would cut a cheater out of my life after a break up!

Update: please, I really need ur help!    3 months ago

When the dumper says they want to remain friends, they're basically trying to make you feel better after the fact you've been dumped. Think about it like this, if the relationship didn't work out, why would a friendship work out? Unless you both decided to end the relationship and that a friendship would be best for both of you. In this case he decided a friendship would be better, misleading you to think he actually wants a friendship.

Maybe the friendship will work on much later down the road when both of you have gotten over feelings for one another. He was probably trying to be your friend just to make himself feel better for ending the relationship with you.

Question Asker I know what you mean but the thing is that we met at uni and there he knows many people but only trusts like 2. so he kept on telling me that I was 1 of the only people he could actually talk to properly and that he didn't wanna loose that. there was a point when I avoided him after the break up and he started looking for me and told me again to stay friends, only afterwards he realised that talking made it too hard so we stopped but now he says again to be friends. I mean why say it so often if its aLIE - 3 months ago
