Yes or No? And why do guys suggest it? Do they want someone to keep around . . . or do they think it sofens the blow of a break-up?

It depends I know one stayed because he wanted to get back together, one wanted it because we had the same friends. and some use it to soften the blow I usually will test the friend thing I can be a pain don't say it if you dont' mean it is my philosophy.

Question Asker How do you test it? - 2 months ago
Answerer I will text or call them see if they respond, ask them to hang out (this is the best test if they want to be your friend they will agree), and sometimes if I am tired of putting in the effort friendship is a two way street I will see if they notice if I am gone and contact me on their own. I find that if they don't mean it they won't text you or call you back they sort of disappear. It hurts more knowing they lied to you but I feel it is best to know early on so I can grieve imediately. - 2 months ago

I would love to be friends with my ex. But I do realize it won't be for some time. We have to get over feelings first, otherwise it will just end up as one big game.do we get back together? Who still has feeling? Who can hurt who? I think time heals, and if you can be friends-great! But if it's not possible, it's not possible and both people need to move on.
