I did this same thing to my wife years ago. I thought if I showed too much interest she may feel I was pushing too hard and lose interest in me. Come to find out, those were the three longest days of her life. She said she almost gave up on me. So he may just be trying to act cool or afraid to let you know he is interested.

Not necessarily. Don't freak out - it seems like, from what you said, that he was taking the initiative which is a good sign :-). Of course something weird may have come up, but don't dwell on that. When is your next class? You'll see him then, right? If he hasn't called, play things like you have been and see if he responds like HE has been. If so, bring up the fact that he hasn't called casually.
