Should I accept the double-date idea?

So, there was this guy who I really liked. I never wanted to allow myself to like him but I fell for him really hard. I'm really shy and quiet and often have a tendency to shut people out; you could say that my personality is aversive. With him I took a chance, for the first time ever. We broke up once. He apologized a few months later, said he was sorry that he had disappeared on me. Said that what he had done was wrong and he knew it. Said he was going to show me that things would be better. I chose to have faith and believe him.

Now I'm going to make the same choice I made several months ago. I'm cutting him out. It's definitely not that I don't like him. Instead of coming back in my life, as he gave me the impression he would he has now taken up a drinking, partying kind of lifestyle. I know deep down inside he still admires me, he has inadvertently compared me to his mother. Unlike his mom, I'm not always going to be there. If he doesn't respect me and choose to make an effort to be a part of my life then I'm done. This shy, quiet girl is used to being single. I'm strong enough to deal. I'm going to hope things will one day change. I don't want to be alone forever but I need to get away. Sometimes the hardest part is knowing when you deserve better. It's not that he's not good enough, it's just that I deserve to be treated better.
Do you think I'm doing the right thing? My best friend wants to set me up with another guy. Should I try it?

If you know you deserve to be treated better, then you're making the right choice for YOU, and that's what counts. If you want to try dating someone else, go for it. What do you have to lose? But no matter what direction you choose, it seems you're a person who stays true to themselves, which is an admirable quality.
