Think of it this way, are you familiar with the UFC (mix martial arts)? Well they say that the fight is won weeks before the actual contest. In other words, the time you put into practice will determine how one performs when it actually counts.

So before you talk to that guy you like, you should start out by just talking to people in general. I was just like you (and just about everyone goes through this) and was but what helped me was just talking to just about everyone about this and that. This is your training and practice before the fight. Talk to people you aren't attracted to and people you are with the intent of good conversation, this way it keeps you from stumbling.

Then analyze what seemed to work and what didn't to get people to bite. Eventually everything will seem more natural through practice. Just like a fighter who knows when he should shoot and when he should sprawl.
