I not experienced at all when it comes to dating or asking someone out or if they are even interested. I have this friend and he's really great, so easy to talk to and we have a lot of the same opinions about things and we can just goof around. I don't know what the tell tale signs are when a guy likes you but he's the only guy that compliments an outfit or how my hair looks or seems really interested in what I have to say. Prom is coming up and its all innocent and our group of friends are pairing up for the night, neither of us has a date and I was wondering should I ask him, wait, do you think he's interested? If so, how should I go about it?
It sounds like you two both like to keep things low key so ask him in a low key manner. Don't make a big production of it -- just bring up the prom in convo and ask if he has a date and when he says, 'no' tell him you don't either and something to the effect that you two should go together and not be the only dateless ones there. That is pretty low key :-)
