Why ask if not going to follow through?

After dropping about 100 hints, the guy I like finally picked up on one and told me I should come along with him to go do something. He gave me the day he was going and I gave him my number in case I couldn't meet up with him at his work (its a gym and I am a regular) beforehand. When I got there on the day we were supposed to go he was like "I am going home" and I asked him if he was still going to go tonight and he told me no, his finger hurt. I was like 'oh, alright' and walked away and he called out to me "but we will talk later". Why even bother asking me to go if you didn't mean it? Did he just feel bad for me? Am I reading too much into it? Just sucks because I was extremely excited and was hoping to go.

Maybe he was just having a bad day, it does happen. Give him some time to work out what ever is going on in his life or better yet ask him if something is wrong and then go have some lunch with him. For some reason men think more clearly on a full stomach or maybe it's just me.
