He smiles at me sometimes and he walks me to the car and sometimes doesn't say much. I'm so shy that I get so I can't even ask him anything either! I'm really liking him though. Is this hopeless?

Even though the two of you are not saying much verbally, you are speaking in volumes with body language. He wants to be near you and you let him. The both of you are desperatly trying to talk to each other(as in more intimatly) but it is happening in short but exciting burst hoping this is the moment the other one opens up more.
The inspiration is hiting me now: The both of you are more than likley deep minded people that are not good at small talk, bring up a subject that requires deep thought and time to fully explain. Could be anything along the lines of religion, spirituality, life or the meanings of life, why are we here, what's the plan, where do we go after death etc.
I hope you see where I am going with this, I am sure you can bring up something that requires a lot of time to explain. Who knows, it is possible you both need a mental "turn on" first.

Either way, yes he's interested. There's levels you know.it goes "interested, friends, likes, loves" and right now I would say you're in the "interested" level.
no I wouldn't say its hopeless I would say he might actually be in to you. ask him how he fells about you or just let him know how you feel even though it might be hard. I got my boyfriend like that and we've been together 4 about 3 or 4 months now. good luck

Describe your ideal first date; Where do you go? What do you wear? How does the date end?
My first ideal date would be somewhere simple, like dinner and a movie. I would wear something casual, yet comfortable. The date would end by the guy walking me to my door, and me thanking him for a nice time...and maybe even a kiss ; )
Afterwards..what will your date know about you?
