You answered your own question, he will walk out of your life! You have to just let him know how you feel you never know what will come out of it. Of course no one likes rejection but you have to give it a shot or you are gonna have that "what if" in your head so go ahead and if he does not respond the way you may have hoped then it's his loss because there a millions of fish out in the sea that will want you anyway right! think about it this way, if you don't try you can't succeed. what's the worst that could happen, tell him you like him and if he does score, and if he doesn't, be friends and know that you did find out, and not live your life wondering what could have happened.
