How to be friend with guy in friendster?

I saw this guy whom I really want to be friend (hoping later we can develop into smth) with in friendster. But I've tried to add him as a friend but he didn't approve me as a friend or reject me. This is my 1st time that I really wan to be friend with a guy. He owns a blog and I constantly go to his blog to see whether he has updated more on his life or not. Should I send him a msg via friendster? What should I write in the content of the msg? He is 4 years older than me and I know nothing about his interest, which means that at the moment we have nothing in common. I am sure that I cannot write 'hi, can you please be my friend' in my msg. Please help me. I really want to be his friend from the bottom of my heart but I don't want to sound so needy.
