Help with shy guy? Wanna break the ice before christmas! = )

Hi! Hope some of you will help me with this one:
There is this one guy at my school (we only have one class together), that I been having eye contact with lately. I see him several times a day, even thought our school is very big, and I've been suspecting him to run into me on purpose. Alhough, he seem a little bit shy, and have never tried to talk with me - just eye contact, he smiled at me one time, but not a "full smile", just flashing his teeth = P
Most of the time, he seems to be with his friends, and I don't like them very much, so it will be hard to talk to him when they are nearby. They are all very outgoing, and seem to comment upon everything, sooo. a bit frigthened! Well, he seems to leave his friends a few times a day - every time I sit in the cafeteria at school, he walks past me and out of the area, then comes back again, still alone. I keep getting eye contact with him every time he walks in or out. Our school is very new, so the "walls" in the classrooms are made of glass, at least the walls towards the
corridor. To get to one of his other classrooms, he needs to pass one of my classes, and he seems to be trying to get my attention then, at least he walks out of his class and past mine at least one time during this classes (while staring at me).
In the class we have together, we are seated in two different rows (he with his friends, I with mine), and I frankly don't dare to turn around and make eye contact with him. I hoped to get contact with him in our break, but its really hard to figure out something to say/ask him about. He doesn't really care about school, so I don't wanna sound like a nerd. = )
In our break last week (it is a very well known fact that I'm a coffee addict, so I have to refill my cup every break at the coffee machine), he was leaning againist the machine while talking to a friend, and sort of blocking the whole area, with a rediculous pose (wannabe macho?) :P Before I reached the machine, another friend of him had pushed him away to get trought. After giving me a quick glance, he laughed and turned away.
Do you think he is into me? Guys? If so, how should I approach him? I really want to break the ice before our christmas holiday! :)

Hello bananasplit,
you should like maybe get his phone number somehow, perhaps approaching him and getting it, idk, and like cal him and set up a place to meet up with him to do stuff with, I don't know bowling if he likes bowling.
I use to be shy, it helps to do something you guys have in common and show that you're interested, get to know him and then he will know you exist. Shy people sometimes are in their own little world so you just have to bring him out of his shell by inviting him to events or to a night out or to the mall, something.
