I like this one guy, he is in all my classes, and he says we are best friends. We talk at school every once in awhile, but we talk on instant messengers for hours, we stay up all night talking. We usually ask questions about each other's life. He kinda gets a little jealous when I flirt with his friends at school. Does he like me, or are we just really close friends?
I would wait a lil while and see if he asks you and if he doesn't and he seems to e holding back then you ask he may be afraid you will say no. some was to see if he's holding back is if you think it may be the right moment to ask but he starts getting nervous or just seems different

but how often is "every once in a while" ? depending on the answer, that also could play a role.

Well, I think he likes you or may like you. But you can tell from this detail that you two are like best friends.
The only way to find out if he really likes you is by asking him yourself, or have a friend do it. That way you'll get an honest answer and will stop wondering.
But what ever the answer, I don't think it'll make you sad because it sounds like he wouldn't want to hurt your feelings.
