Compliment her just like the Anonymous girl said ask her questions about her family what makes her really happy, what makes her sad, movies, food, etc just make them interesting so then when you see her in school you'll have something to talk about when you see her.
Compliment her a lot.and I mean a lot. Give her the bottom line of how you feel. Ask her odd questions like what she's scared of or what makes her really happy. In my opinion, you have to start off the conversation with a hey, how was your day :) and I think that'll show her a lot of how you feel towards her.
My suggestion is don't ask her much on IM, I know sounds strange right, but if you really want to get to know the girl ask her in person, and unless you want just be friends with her, don't talk to her on IM that much, or if you do say something like hey I am about to leave (even if your not) and say but how about dinner Saturday night , and if she says ok leave it at that don't ask her any more questions just leave it at that and say ok sounds good. Also unless your already in a relationship keep the phone calls to a minimum unless she calls you, the later at night the better. Basically don't always be there let her miss you, and when you do this she will contact you, trust me it works.
If you are more comfortable with writing to express yourself, this isn't a bad idea at all, but eventually you should try to go on an actual date with her.
Generally, just start with open-ended questions like asking how her day went, or if she has done anything fun lately. Only ask about things in a positive way too, and avoid touchy subjects. If you insult any aspect of her life or constantly bring up subjects that are painful or boring to talk about, you'll ruin your chances. If you are truly interested in her, then you won't have any problem at all asking questions, as you will want to get to know as much about her as possible. If you find that the questions are difficult to come by, then you might not be as interested as you think.
