Try asking him if he had seen a new popular movie. No matter if he says he has or not, make a comment that you have been wanting to go see it, but you are trying to find someone to go with you. If he likes you, he may offer to go with you, even if he has already seen it.

But if you still choose to do the email thing you need to get straight to the bottom of this issue. Ask him the bottom line of his feelings but on another note, you two have only been talking for 3-4 days and that's not a lot of time so just keep that in mind to whatever he says.
