The bible also says that the gift of God is eternal life...

Let me ask you a question... Is the understanding of the past greater than the gift of eternal life?

I disagree. Understanding what and why a thing has happened does not always make it any better. I believe the greatest gift God can give us is salvation. The devil may understand full well what has gone on in his "life" but I don't think it brings him much peace. Making good choices, having hope and faith, having people that love you and people that you love bring peace. Understanding what and why is only helpful if it helps you make better decisions in the future, but it won't fix bad decisions or bad outcomes in the past.

I am not old enough, and I don't have enough life experience to say that this is the greatest gift that God can give you, but understanding, which I pray for everyday, is a great gift in my opinion

It depends on the situation really, at times things are best left unexplained. When you figure out some mysteries it can make matters worse so in those instances an explanation would not help and would probably raise up even more, harder unanswered questions. The peace in life need not always come from the understanding of why or why not something has occurred to you, but rather simply in knowing you did what was possible under the circumstances and that the event has happened and was most likely out of your hands. The peace in life can also arrive from the simplest things we tend to overlook due to over analyzing events that occurred and why they did so, if you take it as it comes, it can lead to more peace than over critiquing every minor detail.

well I'm an atheist, so the God reference is just to a higher all knowing imaginary source to me. However, I don't think knowing is the important thing, I think happiness trumps all other gifts. You could be depressed and it probably wouldn't help to know why.

If I believed in God I'd probably agree; people would love for their life to have a meaning, it's the ultimate validation.

I completely and utterly disagree. If we knew why everything happened in life, it'd take the suspense out of it! Like when you're watching a movie, ?HT wants someone ?HT's already seen the movie to blurt out what's gonna happen next!? Id much rather wrack my brain wonderin why "he didn't call" and come up with my own interesting theories like that "his phone got swallowed by a great white" than just get the black and white "he's not interested" it hurts less and I get to be creative

i agree because everyone wants to know what life is about and why things happen the way they happen.
but I personally think that one of the greatest things god can give to someone is true love.

i agree to an extent as it would help not be so bitter over the bad things you had to go through if you had explanations to why you had to go through to them

I agree with it: Reason being? It offers closure and understanding. Too many people go through life wondering why things happen the way they do.

I disagree with it becase: It's not the greatest gift God can give plus not everyone believes in God.
