Stevie Ray Vaughn BB King Robert Johnson Alex Lifeson Rick Dainko Muddy Waters Pete Townsend George Harrison Steve Howe Randy Bachman Dickey Betts Rudolph Schenker Keith Richards Tom Petty Tom Scholz Mike Campbell Peter Frampton Tommy Emmanuel Mason Williams Jason Becker
For technique, Steve Vai cannot be matched. Also, even though he is probably the most egotistical man alive, Yngwie Malmsteen also has skill on a guitar. A particular favourite of mine is the oriental guitarist Jerry C, who has acquired fame on YouTube for playing the song Canon Rock (a rock adaptation of Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D).
However, when it comes to innovation, Jimi Hendrix and Edward Van Halen are masterminds. If it weren't for these people, then a lot of genres of music would not have existed. Truly one off performers.
I'm voting for Slash, though I'm not familiar with Velvet Revolver. The Guns 'N Roses days were excellent and I think "Estranged" is one of the five best songs I've ever heard.
I don't like Van Halen. I've heard more of it than I ever wanted to, but never anything that made me stop and say, wow, I love this.
The thing about van halen is that he has talent and he did kind of bring a lot to the rock era. I personally don't think he's that fantastic. I like "you really got me" and "jamies cryin" but that's about it. Guns and roses is much better than velvet revolver. - 10 months ago

I'm not enough of a musician to know the styles or new elements, so any of these guys could do something incredible and sneak it right by me! But with Slash the emotion is there for me. I hear it and feel it. - 10 months ago

I play the guitar but yeah, I see what you're saying. My personal favorite is jack white just because its so simple and raw. thanks for the imput! - 10 months ago
I agree with you about Van Halen and Morello, but I kind of think that since Van Halen came earlier he's going to be better. White and Morello are pretty young compared to Van Halen.
I play the guitar, and I voted D) because he came before the rest here, and he IS Van Halen. And Jimmy Page def needs to be here. And Hendrix. But who I like the best and why: Eddy Vedder is the Pearl, but Mike McCready is the Jam in Pearl Jam. And Todd Whitner from tantric - he is called the Phenom!
I play the guitar too, but I didn't put Hendrix or Page because I think that they are the best guitar players and I'm trying to decide between these five. Plus the poll can only have 5 options max. Yeah, McCready and Whitner are amazing. Thanks for the input! - 10 months ago

Deciding between the five def. Van Halen! Then Slash, Thayil, Morello and White. Although give White and Morello some time and watch what they can do. So I think in time, White will jump on the list, and Thayil will move down. - 10 months ago

That would be my listing of them. - 10 months ago

Yeah, White and Morello are still really young compared to the rest. personally, I think Thayils better than Slash. Slash is probably more talented, but I don't think Slash really brought anything new like Van Halen did. But he's still pretty good. - 10 months ago

Guns and Roses was my first real favorite band. They were raw, and something new at the time, like metallica, granted I was only little, Slash had separated himself from the hair bands that were out at the time like skid row, poison, and motley crew. - 10 months ago

Thats the only reason I put slash over thayil, I have even read about slash saying that there are a lot of way better guitarists out there, can read music better, know the mechanics better, but watching slash play when I was little was cool, even on tv. - 10 months ago
Question Asker
Ooo.. I listened to soundgarden when I was younger so that's why I put thayil over slash hahah. everyone just has their preferences... I think motley crue is annoying. - 10 months ago
Question Asker
I actually really like Jack White because he's able to make good music without needing a bass guitar and because everything he does in the white stripes is very simple. I like how he tries to incorporate the blues. I think he's better than he lets on. - 10 months ago
Guns also featured two different styles during their days. Most bands have a few of those ballads, but I think Slash deserves bonus points for blending in perfectly with both styles instead of just being okay in the background on a few softer songs. - 10 months ago
Question Asker
Thats truee. I think Slash is amazing, there's no question about that. But I wish he did something new in velvet revolver. Its a good band, but they really haven't done anything too amazing like guns did. - 10 months ago
Stone temple pilots is suppose to reunite, Makes Scott Weiland put Velvet revolver on the back burner. It not a Slash thing, I don't think. - 10 months ago
Well I have to say I am glad you put Jimi Hendrix in there... He is amazing! I also like Stevie Ray Vaughn.. He covered Jimi's Little Wing and did and amazing job with it...
