Update: What about if we legalized it, it would make sex trafficking and drugs less likely because it would be monitored? How many of you are for abortion, yet against legalizing prostitution? Isn't it, in the same sense, keeping a woman from doing what she wants

Update: with her own body? Especially if it is monitored, such as constant drug tests, doesn't that make it ok and safe for her and her clients?

Although I don't support prostitution, I don't think the government has the right to make it illegal. If someone wants to sell themselves and someone else wants to pay for it than its a mutual agreement. Its better than illegal prostitution that's going on now where the woman is forced to prostitute herself.
I don't see why it is illegal, I'm not for it but it's their body so they can do with what they like in my eyes. It's probably illegal just because drugs plays a big role in it
It should be legalized and regulated like they do in Europe. The prostitutes in Europe are normal looking and have the police as their protection, the prostitutes in America look like junkies (most are anyways) and have to be exploited by pimps for protection. Every time we put a prohibition on something in America it's the gangs/mafia that profit...that's how I have Italian family members that never set foot in college but are living in mansions in Staten Island.
Legalize. Not only would it make access to health care easier for them, but it would also make it more difficult to exploit prostitutes when they no longer have to fear law enforcement. Moreover, our police and our courts have more important business than this.
It should be legal, so that it can be regulated. In Nevada it is legal and the girls get regular medical inspection, good wages, and the illegal prostitution is cut way down. By regulating the pimps and underage girls are kept out of the process. I would not be interested in a prostitute, but many men are and they provide a needed service. If I was going to go to one, I would prefer a legal one for the obvious health benefits.
No. It should not be made legal. Sex should exist between 2 beings who love each other. Sex should happen out of love & not out of lust. Encouraging prostitution is falling for lust.
I really feel bad for the girls who have to resort to prostitution at a very tender age, as they have no other means of earning money. :-(
This sounds very wonderful. But in this world, an impossibility. Sex SHOULD be about love...but in this day in age, the sex is usually just about the sex. All people can do is try to make it safer. - 7 months ago
Even though you believe that the sex should exist between two people that love each other not everyone else thinks that way. By making prostitution illegal, the government is forcing their opinions about sex onto you. The government should not encourage prostitution, but they should not force their morals on others who feel differently. - 7 months ago
I'm definitely not a fan of prostitution, but there are some people who are into that kind of stuff. Besides, a woman's body, is her body. Sure, if prostitution was legalized, STDs would spread more rapidly. But the guys who are willing to pay the woman for the night, should accept the risk, since they can't give the woman an HIV test before they do anything with her. Also, I agree that there would be less rape. As for the whole sexual trafficking thing, that's happening even though prostitution is illegal now. Slavery is illegal. Sexual trafficking is illegal. There needs to be some way that the higher-ups in the world can keep that from happening.
Legalising it would not encourage it but regulate it. Prostitution will happen regardless of how undesirable some people find it, surely it's better for the people involved to be safe.
i don't understand why it's illegal, if the girl is choosing to do it out of her own will and she sees it as a lively-hood, and she uses protection, then I don't see an issue. if girls are being picked up off the streets and being turned into crack whores or if they are being forced to give up what they earn to a pimp, then I don't think that's ok.
Yes. It should be made legal. I will say first of all, that I DO believe that it's very wrong. But I am also a very "ends justify the means" person, and I believe that if prostitution is made legal, it'll actually cause more good than harm. First reason, is that if made legal, a brothel institution will most likely be put in place. A brothel is an establishment in which women are registered as prostitutes, and customers would come in and choose their woman for the night, pay a fee, and the money goes towards the brothel and the prostitute gets a certain percent of her earnings. Sounds crude, I know, but stay with me. Now, if this were made legal, that would mean that women who register MUST be checked for all STI's on a regular basis, and she must not be on drugs or alcohol whether she is sleeping with her Jon or not. That means that the married perverts that take on these prostitutes won't be bringing anything nasty home and giving it to his unsuspecting wife or unborn children. Because one would have to register for this job like any other, they will do a criminal check, as with any other job. They will make sure you don't have a criminal record, and they will make sure that you are 18 (or 21, depending on your laws). That means a decrease in underage girls walking around at night. Why? Because monkey-see-monkey-do! If these young girls don't see other women on the streets making money, that thought won't enter their head. And they won't see it as often, because women who are whoring themselves will be in closed buildings, and hidden away from the public. Which also means cleaner streets, and less crime at night. No more prostitutes washing up on beaches in plastic bags. Prostitution isn't the best idea for a job, but they deserve safety too, and they certainly don't deserved to be abused or killed. In the brothels, they will also have security. People will be paid to make sure that the Jon's don't get too rough or rowdy. Making prostitution legal doesn't sound like a good idea to a lot of people, because they think that it'll just cause more whores to run around in the streets, when really, it makes the whole dirty business just a little bit cleaner. It might even be good for the economy. Take note that the prostitutes only get a percentage of their earnings. That's because the business takes the rest. Pimps don't have to pay taxes. Businesses do, though. And since we can't stop it, we'd might as well make money off of it. It sounds bad, but it's true. And there's my two cents. Er...essay. Yes. Prostitution should be made legal.
So prostitution works better as a freelance criminal enterprise controlled by pimps and organized crime, than as a regulated legal enterprise controlled by governments?
The critical question that the author of the link fails to address is: In what way is the status quo--where prostitutes are a criminal class, managed by criminals--a success? - 7 months ago
If prostitution is legalized, you should be required to get a license to prostitute yourself. All illegal prostitution operations should not immediately become legal. They should have to meet certain standards to obtain a license and become legal. If prostitution is legalized the government should look to the Netherlands as an example of why strict regulations are important. - 7 months ago
i'm no prostitute , but if people need or want to do that for whatever reason , and they can (and will) legal or not , especially if that's how you need to get your money .
