I'm shocked by how few "under 18" members know how to spell common words. and it's not just the teenagers... all ages fall victim to it... but I'm curious what causes a 16/17 year old to not be able to spell "tongue" or "disgusting" correctly?
Jk, I know its the internet, no one gets a bad grade for misspelling words on the internet, etc etc. But people can at least TRY to make what comes out of their fingers logical.
Dictionaries are cheap, unless you're on the Web, in which case they're free.
People use the the language badly when they can't be bothered with using it correctly, but I'll be damned if I waste my time translating their mangled slurs into English. Good on you for trying.

I have noticed that the posts with bad spelling and bad punctuation, besides being difficult to follow, show lack of rational thought. Many of these posts would have been unnecessary if the posters thought through the problem.
I always answer posts because there are real people behind them. Especially the 18 and under. They'll see how the world reacts them soon enough. The 18-24 posters have the most wrenching posts. But I ramble.
Heaven forfend! I even read my answers through before posting them.
It's fun when I can fool the spell checker! Forfend did it.
I really appreciate a properly spelled, grammatically correct post. Makes it a pleasure to read and respond.
At least they can communicate with some degree of probity. I wouldn't give a monkey a hard time for only screeching at me; similarly I wouldn't give someone with lesser educational opportunities a rough ride for a few spelling mistakes.
Lesser educational opportunities? like what? not being able to go to elementary school? I went to public school, they teach you how to spell. - 5 months ago

Miss, you are a rank snob, plain and simple.
Besides, if everyone spelled flawlessly, then how would you justify your feelings of superiority? - 5 months ago
Question Asker
Lol I don't feel that I am superior, poor spelling is just a pet peeve of mine, I didn't intend for it to come off snobby... I actually just went on my Facebook and my younger sister (19) wrote this long status update with so many words misspelled... I really cringed on that one - 5 months ago

If someone is unable to receive proper education, then there is no way I would be critical over their spelling. But most of these people have received the same level of education as I have. - 5 months ago

Well you can either accept her as imperfect or perhaps even begin to realize that perfection doesn't have to be anal-retentive.
I love good spellers but if there's serious spelling mistakes that prevent comprehension, then what you do is ask for clarification, you don't berate them for not being as intelligent as you. If you are truly intelligent then you will use your wits for good, rather than haranguing poor ignorant younger sister for her fast-and-loose use of the English language. - 5 months ago

Um... all I said was I cringed... She's not even in the same state as me... I don't think she knew I cringed lol you seem to be getting a little too offended by me bringing up a pet peeve. Let's just leave it alone now, ok? - 5 months ago

Anyway I think the root problem here is that you are patently more intelligent than your peers and siblings, but don't feel recognized for it, so you bridle at various offenses of propriety and good taste. Well, there you go: you're smart. - 5 months ago

And I will thank you not to pull the passive-aggressive routine. :) - 5 months ago
Really, it did. But yeah, I know exactly what you mean and it bugs the hell out of me too. How are people graduating high school nowadays? Didn't school used to be about "HEY! You're not getting out here until you learn this sh*t like the back of your hand!" or something? Why can't it still be like that?

It's the decline of our education system and/or these kids weren't paying attention in school. I'm not saying people have to be perfect but it's a little disturbing when people can't spell simple words. What is really going on?
I think technology has a lot to do with it. Abbreviations and informal writing are used all the time online and in text messaging, so people get comfortable with it, and their writing skills suffer as a result. They become less careful about their spelling. Spell Check probably doesn't help either since so many people rely upon it to correct their mistakes.
I couldn't care less about the odd spelling mistake...my own spelling is pretty awful,i add e's and get letters round the wrong way because I'm a little dyslexic so I'm not going to split hairs over it...i just don't care, long as I can read it. I do hate it when its all text speak and random capitals though...wouldnt miss sleep pver it though.
