Say if you and your friend were looking for a job. One day you and your friend were driving around and you both see a Help Wanted sign at a Grocery store. So you both go inside and ask for a job application. But this is the part that your friend knows someone that works in the store that hands out the job applications. So while you and your friend finish filling out your applications you turn them in and then the next week they call your friend for a interview and you get upset because you have experience of working at a grocery store and your friend doesn't. Why is that? Also we are legal to work and don't have any criminal charges on are record?
almost everyone is qualified to work at a grocery store, so someone that knows someone there stands out, AND they have them as a reference to say "yes, this person is a hard working and reliable"
A lot of the time it's who you know, not what you know. People are more likely to hire someone they know as a favor rather than take a chance on a stranger. It's not fair though but that's how it is.
Yes, unfortunately, it does help to know people. It is a good idea to get to know people who can help you get a job! I'm not saying, be friends with those people. Just that when you have an opportunity, introduce yourself and let them know that you would be interested in any job openings they have. Then send them your resume.
Here's an example. You are watching a football game and your friend tells you that a guy standing nearby is his old boss. Ask him to introduce you. Then mention that you are looking for a job and ask if you can send in your resume or come by for an interview.
Right now the economy is really bad. So a lot of the time, there are many people are applying for the same job. If you need a job, don't wait until you see a help wanted sign. Go into the store and say you would be interested in a job. Ask if there are any openings. If there are not, hand over your resume and ask to be called if any jobs open up.
I don't know if you can legally work. If you don't have a criminal record and you are a citizen of the country, then you should be able to work. A lot of the time though, you will have to take a drug test and get a background check when you get a new job.
Networking is the most powerful force in obtaining anything. "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is a very instructive phrase. If you have connections, people will pull strings for you. If you don't, you will have an uphill battle and be a step behind.
