I was watching the news and saw that a 15 year old girl in California got raped on school property during the homecoming dance last weekend.
Supposedly, there were people leaving the dance just to watch the rape...which lasted 2 and a half hours...and some even participated. As many as 6 guys raped and beat this 15 year old while a large group of people took pictures with their cell phones...But nobody called 911 to report it.
She was found unconscious and naked from the waist down under a bench after someone who overheard students "reminiscing" about the incident tipped off the police.
My question is...what would you have done if you were there and saw everything? What do you think? Should the bystanders have done something...would YOU have?
Update: Also, Why do you think nobody helped?

So many people say they would have done something but I think few actually would. I can honestly say that I stay out of people I don't knows business until it crosses the line to where their is a physical confrontation. Girls are supposed to be protected by guys, if you aren't willing to take that responsibility then you can't call yourself a man.
I think it's sadly inexcusable that people did what they did by laughing, taking pictures, and participating like they did. Even more disgusting that a group of people could HAVE done something. You know, as a male, I hope these six 'men' who did this get what's coming to them. Cowards. But I think that so many people were shocked as to what was happening before their very eyes, that they were consumed by fear and possible retribution.
Take into account that you ran a real risk of being knifed if you tried to inetervene with THIS crowd! I't's easy to say you'd do it in the absract, but the reality is you would be risking your life!.
I would have called the cops , but not tried to physically intervene myself. Sorry, but I'm not going to risk my life for a girl I don't know...
I would have confronted them immediately. I hope that they are all tried as adults and get locked up for a while. That includes everyone who watched, because they are just as guilty as the ones doing the raping.
I don't drink nor am I aggressive, but whenever I go out to a bar, I always bring a knife because I've had some bad experiences in those places. In this case, I would intervene and I wouldn't doubt to use the knife if necessary.
So you would have stabbed the rapists? Wouldn't that be scary if there were so many? Do you think it would be worth going to jail to help a stranger and possibly getting hurt yourself? You would take the chance? Honestly? - 22 days ago

Rapists are the worst kind of scum next to pedophiles. Willing to hurt people mentally and physically to accomplish thier own sick sexual needs. But its not like I would stab them out of the blue:
1. call the police and tell them to get out 2. if they don't leave, take out the knife 3. if they become violent, I'd use it and it would go under selfdefense or something

I was at a party once where drunk guy got a bit too friendly with a girl and she told him to stop several times. After observing for a while I stepped in and calmly told him to go away. After a few heated words, he smiled and backed off. Looked at the girl, she thanked me and told her it was no problem. - 21 days ago
Yes that's what I thought too. But on the news they said there would only be charges if they were contributing to the rape (ie holding her down or covering her mouth) or egging on the rapists. I hope that's not the case though-if it is...our society is really going downhill. - 22 days ago

No, I mean, I don't live in the US, I live in Europe. It's not against the law there, but not reporting certain crimes (including rape) is a crime here. - 22 days ago

Really? Can't you just type in Richmond High School rape and the story will pop up? - 22 days ago

But you'll probably get updates on TV, so just update the question when there's something new so we'll know to check out what's new with the story. It's more convenient than googling it all the time. - 21 days ago
I would have intervened. As a woman, there is no way I could witness another female get raped and do nothing. The bystanders are just as guilty because they basically sat there and watched it like a spectator sport and did nothing to help the poor girl. If it were me I would have started yelling and making a commotion to draw attention to what's going on. Physically intervening into a group of 6 men assaulting 1 woman and the rest standing around doing nothing wouldn't be too smart, we'd likely just both get attacked. If it started looking unsafe for me or the guys did not stop I'd leave the area but call the police. In the age of cell phones and instant technology it's a damn shame no one called 911. I hope they all burn in hell. I don't even know if I want to bring children into this world sometimes. People call me crazy but I carry a knife with me when I go out at night for reasons like this and I'm gonna get a gun permit and get some mace too. It's scary out here.
I think no one helped because they are sick bastards. You cannot tell me that you would pull out a cell phone and videotape it because you were "scared" or in "shock". These are not people, they are savage animalistic sociopaths.
I don't see how people can stand there and watch something so brutal. I would've been so disgusted that I couldn't stay and watch, and I don't think I could've just walked away without a second thought. What happened to that poor girl is going to be with her for life--I would feel partially responsible if I didn't make any attempt to stop it.
I think it has to do with diffusion of responsibility (it's a psychology/sociology theory). Ever hear of Kitty Genovese? She was stabbed to death outside of her apartment building with neighbors watching/listening. The man actually stabbed her, left, came back 10 minutes later, raped her, stole money, stabbed her again and left before anything was done. When a lot of people see something happen, they assume that someone else will do something about it. When everyone makes that assumption, no one does anything.
It might have something to do with the whole mob mentality too; people act differently when they're in groups. And depending on what kind of people were there to see the attack, they might've been afraid to tell someone.
That's just so wrong! I would have at the very least called the police to report it if I had come across what was going on, and try to get a shot of the people who were attacking her to identify them. I would even be willing to testify in court if it came down to that. Really, some people can be so thoughtless and horrible at times.
