I'm thinking about getting my boyfriend a multi-tool for Christmas (aka leatherman of some sort etc) however I don't exactly know the most about what makes a good multi-tool -.-' (only thing I have ever had being a swiss army knife). I know lost his last one and has been looking to get a new one but hasn't gotten around to it, and he likes practical gifts. So I was wondering if any one had any advice on useful features to have or even specific knives they have had (ones that are good ones to avoid etc). Don't worry too much about price when you mention them as usually you can find things on sale for $50-70 (which if it is a nice enough knife I may be willing to spend).
I vote for a Leatherman brand tool. I have one and use it every day at work. It's durable and versatile, but not too bulky or heavy. Plus, all Leatherman tools have a 25 year warranty. If it rusts or breaks in the next 25 years, Leatherman replaces it free of charge.
I also suggest that you buy one with a locking feature, so that all the little tools lock in position for use. This is a little feature that's easy to overlook ... but makes the Leatherman a million times easier to use.
I have the Leatherman wave, which I cost me $65 or 70. More info: link
