I am a big believer that your dreams are telling you something. I am not so sure that they are a premonition of things to come. If your dreaming about your ex boyfriend then it may because there are still unanswered questions or unrequited feelings you may still have. In some cases dreams do come true but there is reasons as to why. If you still desire your ex then maybe your dreams are right but It may just be because of the familiarity you still have to him.
I've researched dreaming before in my spare time. I was curious but what I found out was that when people dream bad dreams it mainly means that your mind is just trying to deal with a current stressful situation. Dreaming random dreams means that your mind is too laid back and you need more exercise to get the blood moving more. Dreaming specific stuff such as dreaming about your boyfriend means that you are trying to resolve a question that has been bugging you lately. You may not be dreaming about the future exactly, it may just be your mind is trying to separate what is fact and what is a possible future. I dream about possible futures all the time, so far none of them have come true but most of them were pretty close.

Dreams are a way of our brains processing the information that we encounter during the day. It is possible that you have been thinking about your ex lately and your subconscious is trying to process that information. It is possible that the dreams aren't even actually about your ex but your brain is using him to help process other issues because he is familiar. Dreams do not come true in the way that your question seemed to be asking. If you want him back then go talk to him but don't think that it is because of a dream. Dreams are simply random firing of neurons in the brain and have no way of be precognitive.
