Update: I want to know if when a guy asks for time can it sometimes mean he just needs time to think or does it mean something else?

He's scared of getting hurt or hurting you. Maybe he recently broke up with someone that hurt him and he needs to fully get over her before he gets into another relationship. Just give him his time and space but don't avoid the guy.
Just give him the time he is asking for. The last thing you want is for him to come back prematurely and end up breaking your heart more in the long run, after more things are invested in the relationship. He probably wants to think about the direction he is going in his life and be sure you are the one for him before committing any further. Just give him this space and if he comes back, then you know it truly is you he wants
