How do I go about getting rid of my crippling anxiety around men I'm attracted to? I mean, I can't go anywhere sometimes because it's so stressful and distracting. It probably doesn't help that I've got Panic Disorder.

Update: Ah! Thank you all for your suggestions and support. These are all things that are feasible. It's simply a matter of practice, eh.

stop focusing on them and focus on other things. focus on yourself. take a trip to the bathroom. close your eyes and breath pick a part of your body you don't normally think about and focus on it. keep your eyes closed and try to picture it in your head. do this for a few minutes in the bathroom. It's important to only think about the part of your body that you are focusing on. Do not think about anything else. If you start to think about the guy or anything else just let go and continue to focus on the body part. after a few minutes you might just realize there is nothing really to worry about.

What actually works is taking deep breaths when you're in such a situation.

Also, try as hard as you can, not to think about any possible negative consequences. Yes, it's hard. I have no mental disorders, but I still get very nervous/anxious on occasion, so I can only imagine how you're feeling in such situations. Try not to think about consequences whatsoever, and just flow along and accept what happens. Most men are decent, nice people, and being nervous around someone you're attracted to is normal. So they can probably relate to how you're feeling. What I can tell you, is that it's more common to regret the stuff you didn't do than the stuff you did do (it's a cliché, I know, but nonetheless true). Try to embrace what you're doing as challenges, not as obstacles. And also try to change the very basic way you think about these men. Instead of "I hope he'll like me!", think "Does he deserve me? It would be interesting to find out" and so on.

So take a deep breath, don't think about what might happen, and chill out. If that doesn't work, then professional counseling is a good second option.

Good luck!

i have anxiety too, its horrible. I stay awake at nights just stressing and thinking, I hate it. I found what helps me is to write a list, of everything you are thinking, things you have to do, things that are bugging you. I found it helps quite a bit. hope I helped a bit.

I suffer from anxiety as well and have panic attacks when I get in situations that I can't control. I had recently talked to a psychiatrist about it and she told me I suffer from social anxiety. I have a fear of being in front of people and so on. And that's one thing that I hate, but have learned to accept it. You could go on medication for it, cognitive therapy, or what helps me is just making sure I don't get into a situation that will cause a great amount of anxiety. My counselor told me that it would be good for me to force myself into those uncomfortable situations so I could get over it but if anything it has just made it worse. I don't know how severe your anxiety is or anything, but forcing yourself into those situations could help you overcome it. I to have problems with being around guys I find attractive or that I am interested in. It's just something that you have to get through and hopefully will overcome. I don't think I helped much, but I just wanted you to know that you're not the only one who suffers from it and that it is possible overcome your fears. Hope it eventually get easier for you.
