So I'm a girl who's metabolism is not the quickest. I used to be 5'1 and 137 lbs. Last winter I was sick of always be self conscious about my weight so I went to the gym and ran for 20 minutes every day and did free weights and crunches. I lost a little weight so I was around 5'1 and 123 lbs.

I felt healthy and great but my stomach still wasn't flat, which was my goal.

About 1/2 year later I have kept most of the weight off (i'm 126 lbs.) But my stomach lacks even more. I don't know if this is just my body type but I really want a flat stomach.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to get there. I am a VERY hard worker and I'm dedicated so please suggest anything! I eat fairly healthy but not obsessively healthy. If you have a flat stomach tell me how you eat/exercise.

Any advice is REALLY appreciated!

Yes definitely, Calories that go in must come out. If you you are trying to lose weight, spend more cals. If trying to gain weight, eat about 2-3 times your regular intake.

You can eat un-healthy too. Your body is extremely smart machine as long as you will maintain it well it will function properly. But the important thing is to maintain it properly.
Eating unhealthy means you have to work so much harder to burn/sweat/diggest unhealthy products.
I slimmed down for my sambo competition by:
1. Drinking LOTS of water/tea (eat vitamins.must have electrolytes for your muscles)
2. Eat yogurt (it is one of the best things for your digestive system)
3. Eat your vegetables (I prefer to eat them raw, vitamins and nutrients stay untouched)
4. Fruits (better than any vitamin pills, simply because your body will tell you what it wants, you will be hungry for the fruits that your body needs)
5. To maintain a healthy body calcium is very important, It is not just in your Bones but Blood also. Eat bananas if you get muscle cramps, that's potassium.
Each person's genes are different, so you need to figure out the best plan for yourself.
Guidelines are good, take note of them.but they aren't laws.

Well, for starters - Lets get rid of some old myths

You can't starve yourself out of it
There are no exercises that specifically "Flatten Abs"
Fat can't turn to muscle
muscle can't turn to fat.
Situps/crunches can't make you get abs
You really can't "Isolate" abdominal fat. You must lower the total fat % from your whole body

So here's what you need to do for a flat stomach

1) Exercise once every 48 hours (under an hour of workout)
2) Its all about intensity, not duration - if you exercised for 15 minutes at 80 or 90% of capacity, you'll get more benefit compared to say - 60 miuntes of 40% exercise
3) Don't do aerobics (You end up fatter - because once your body realizes that it uses the same parts over and over again, using the same fuel, over and over again (fat), it will simply store and send more fat)
4) Don't do crunches - they don't help much, and they will ruin your back anyway
5) Do exercises that engage as many muscles as possible (Isolated muscle exercises don't do much of anything)
6) Increase the amount of muscle in your body - (No, you're not going to bulk up and turn into the Hulk or Arnold Schwarzenegger. That takes years of nonstop body building and/or accidental radiation exposure). More muscle in your body, raises your metabolism some more
7) Eat well in the morning, and eat 4-5 times a day
8) Be sure to add fiber in your diet

And remember- Food is not your enemy

Those are very solid ways of getting that flat stomach you want. Remember, its all about raising your fat burning engine.

Hope this helps

Question Asker Wait so running is bad? how is that physically possible? - 5 months ago
Answerer Good thing to bring up

Let me clarify - constant aerobics like the aerobics industry suggests (from 4-5 times a week, for an hour at a time) - is bad.

I would suggest committing one day to running after like exercising 2 days with resistance training. Because if you're doing resistance training you're raising your heart rate to where it needs to be anyway.

Running is good, just don't be a marathon runner or run like one. - 5 months ago
Question Asker Trust me I'm not a marathon and running definitely isn't my strength but I run about 15-20 mins 4 days a week - 5 months ago
badass Try swimming also - 5 months ago
badass This is a great post! and I give this man two thumbs up!
But I would disagree about the crunches. Your back and your abs are tied together. When you are working your abdominals it has an effect on your back also. Want a stronger back work on your abs. I think people gave you A LOT of info, now its up to you to see what is working.
Also, I have messaged you the diet, so look in the inbox. - 5 months ago
Answerer Crunches = Ineffective at best, dangerous at worse

But yes, abdominal muscles are important for a strong back, and if you want - a 6 pack to show (300 anyone?)

There are other ways to exercise the abs, and strengthen abs. Anything from Yoga side planks, to engaging in certain martial arts moves (which strengthen the abs, without straining anything)

Have you ever tried a rowing machine?

It will work directly on your mid-section but also your shoulders - legs - butt - and arms

It makes you lean not bulky as it burns away any excess fat being stored - the type of exercise that you'd only get if you where doing my job dragging 20 to 30 bags of cement on a flatbed trolley through a 1 acre warehouse

you would need to do a minimum of 1000 a week or more - The way I break it up is 200 in the morning ( lowest setting) - 100 (highest tension setting) - 200 (lowest) before I go to bed - do this over at least 2 days a week - more if your up for it

if you keep it on the lowest setting you will lose extra fat - and at the highest you build muscle - and once you see and feel results you can focus on specific parts of your stomach - so its the only real way

You will see results within 2 months if you keep it up as it focus's on such a specific area - I would seriously recommend buying one - or at least talk to the people in the places that sell the machines - if you do you need to spend at least $350 to get something reliable

1 thing - if you already had some extra weight and then started using weights in the gym, that was a big mistake - that's why bodybuilders put on extra weight, to build up extra muscle - and if you where already conscious of your build, weights are the worse thing you could have ever touched - they bulk you up, they do not help you to lose weight

Question Asker I use free weights to tone. No more than 8lbs a weight and I do see a difference with my arms because of it. What exactly is a rowing machine? Is there one at the gym? - 5 months ago
Answerer There should be - I think americans have renamed it for some pointless reason
Best description I could find was this:

In order to have great abdominal muscle you need to be at least at 10% body fat or less.

For Fat people it is hard to get rid of fat in that area
For Skinny People it is extremely hard to get muscle in that area
Which means, ABS ARE HARD!

Genes aren't the cause of your fat around the stomach (Those cheeseburgers that you ate for breakfast, lunch and dinner are).
Trainer at the gym, or a friend that knows what he/she is doing also is great.

And Power/weight lifters are a sorry excuse for the body builders, they have no idea how to work their body. They even don't do the bench press the way it is supposed to be done.
Never seen a power lifter run.

Here's a great article about abs.

ok first of all you're weight is great , but if you want a flat stomach you need to stop eating rice
bread , you need to do some exercise for stomach , not runing or anything else
you need to focus on you're stomach while exercising , don't be so conscious because you'll get sick for reall. good luck

Believe it or not, that's one of the areas that even muscular weigh lifters have troubling isolating the fat from. In other words, many of those muscular guys end up with some belly fat, and no matter what they do, they can't get rid of it, so many get lipo suction; I read that once in one of those men fitness magazines. If you actually do the reasearch, you will find out that you can't really isolate that area and say, if I do such and such exercise, I will flatten this area. I have the same problem you have, and I think is all genetics. My mom has always had a small belly, and hell, I think I got those genes. My two other siblings are the same.anyway, I have gone to the gym, I've done all types of regime, and I've shrunk the belly somewhat, but is never ever been flat. :( Good luck!

Abs are made in the kitchen. If you want those flat abs, your diet needs to be strict. Sad, but true. I notice that when I don't eat many carbs, my stomach looks good. Granted, it does have fat on it, but it looks better on the days I eat low carb vs. high carb.

All you need to do is running but there ia many more options like Eating more fiber. Not only is fiber great for overall weight loss (it fills you up so you don't eat as much), it also prevents constipation, which can cause your tummy to bulge.
Practice the tuck in your belly until it becomes comfortable, and soon it will come naturally--like breathing. Try standing up too straight.

Kneeling on the floor, place your chest on an exercise ball and put your hands on the floor in front of it. Your hands should be directly below your shoulders. Slowly raise your right arm and left leg. Squeeze your stomach as you lift, and aim to get your arm and leg in line with your spine. Don't lift your head or arch your back. Hold, and then slowly lower. Repeat with the opposite arm and leg. Do 10 times. hope it helps

If you are not carrying any or much extra weight, then I think you will mostly just have to accept you are built that way and shape.

You could add some tone with stomach exercises but you will not be able to shift fat/weight from one particular spot.

I have same issues, even when at my lightest 142lbs at 5"6 I still did not have a flat tummy and I never will have either even thought I have managed to tone and strengthen it a bit.

badass Get a trainer - 5 months ago
Answerer So against all the experts that say you cannot spot train, you think you can? Please tell me how I'd love to know cause I do plank on elbows and toes with raises, use a gym ball around 200 reps in total and I can't get a flat stomach. Oh did I mention this is on top of brisk walking, cycling, step, swimming aswell as weights too. - 5 months ago
Question Asker You sound healthy! I bet your stomach looks great actually! Maybe not model skinny but I bet it looks good! Keep up the good stuff - 5 months ago
