First, don't be down on yourself. Friendship isn't valued generally in the mainstream culture in the US, that's the first thing almost any foreigner will tell you.
It won't be easy since most of us think about each other only in the short term. But look for someone who shares your interests, join a club that is organized around your main interests. Look for someone else who seems lonely.
You know what? You'll see them right away!
Then you have to decide if they are willing to be 'true' friends. First of all, they have to BELIEVE in long term friendship! Just ask them if they do! You should be able to tell by the way they answer, by the look in their eyes, if they do or not. Try not to pay attention to what they say because that might be an excuse or a cover.
