I recently saw the new film "Religulous", a documentary style film done by political comedian and commentator Bill Maher. I have questioned God's existence for a while. They jury was out until I saw this film with my girlfriend. The Verdict: I'm agnostic. Maher gives people like us that don't believe a name. We are the silent minority of "Rationalists". I could not find one instance in Maher's film where I disagreed with the questions he was presenting. Religious groups are nailing Maher for making this film. He's getting tons of hatemail from Christians, Muslims, and Jews alike. It was not suprising how angry these religious folks got when the existence of their God is brought into question. You don't plead a convincing case when your instinct is anger instead of openess to the questions and concerns of people like Maher and myself. Maher is right. Man has become arrogant as a result of our arrogant thinking that we have all the answers when in fact we don't. Before we figured out if there was a God, we figured out that Uranium can make a weapon that can kill millions. That is very scary. I will answer Maher's call to remain silent no longer. Your thoughts are welcome and I encourage dialogue between us.
Update: For those of you who have seen the film, love it or hate it, Thank you for having at least enough intellect to view this film and make your own decisions. I hope they release Religulous on DVD in time for me to have something to watch during the holidays.

man cannot explain how the world was created no matter what theories and science we use. There is a God but people refuse to believe that there is something higher than them controlling everything they do, that they have no free will in this world. But it's true. That is why right is right and wrong is wrong. That is why the dark scares us and the light comforts us. There is a God.
Buddhism is the only religion that makes sense to me, and it's not actually a religion... just a way of living life. Their "rules" were written by their deity, supposedly. That's why Christianity is messed up. I'm not going to read this "Bible" that was written by some random guys 600-odd years after Jesus was crucified. I'm agnostic, but I think that the Christians are the biggest hypocrites of all. They say they're good people and God wants them to love everyone, yet they'll hate people that don't support their way of thinking. I've found that when it comes to arguing about what things do and don't make sense about religion, atheists and agnostics don't mind explaining their opinions, but the people who say they love God and are goody-good Christians, suddenly become quiet and uncomfortable... and they can't support this "God" of theirs. It entertains me every time I talk religion with people.
600 odd years after Jesus was crucified? You might want o check your facts on that. The NT was all written within 100 years of the death of Jesus. Even cynical scholars put it at latest at 200 years, and that is only some of the books that they believe to be that late. - A month ago
I am an atheist, and I don't believe in any form of religion. Karl Marx said that "Religion is the opiate of the masses" and I completely agree with him, I am not a communist. For those of you who don't believe me I have a few examples. My first example is Shintoism, which is the dominate religion of Japan. The way the Shintos explain the creation of Earth is: All of the Gods were male, but they got bored one day and decided to create Earth. All of them decided they were too old so they had their beautiful daughter Amateratzu (who was also the sun goddess) create Earth. They did this by giving her a "CORAL SPEAR" which she had to dip into the ocean, and the four droplets that fell off the spear created each Island. After this the Gods wanted to create humans, so they called on Amateratzu to create them in image and likeness of the gods. The problem was they couldn't decide what were good characteristics that the humans should have, so they left it completely to Amateratzu to make them to the "best" of her ability (explains good and bad). Years after the creation of man, Amareratzu thought she was being worshiped enough so she hid herself in a cave, which took away the sunshine. To get her out the Japanese gave her a PEARL necklace, and promised to worship her everyday. Japan is an island society, they thought they were the only ones on the planet. Therefore they only explain why they are here. The Coral Spear and Pearl necklace is important because they used these products because they live on an island. Another example is Animism, which is the belief that everything has a spirit. This specific religion was used by the "Hunter and Gatherers" which were 5 million years before christ. The Hunters and gatherers decided that everything had a spirit because it helped explain why the trees moved, why it rained, etc. This has been the main religion for most of mankind (Christianity, Islam, and Judaism is relatively new). About 10,000 years before christ, the Earth began heating up, and the herds that the humans needed to survive on began to leave. The hunters and gatherers couldn't follow them because it would lead to war between nations. The solution was agriculture, which led to another religion: Polytheism. There were four main gods: sun, earth, wind, and fire. They needed this religion because it helped explain how agriculture was possible. Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are all Land Religions. Most of the references in each religion have things that only a land society would know. For example Moses' staff, was a wooden staff not a coral spear like in Japanese Shintoism. I don't have enough characters left to go into more detail. To sum up what I believe: Religion needs to explain simple things (forgiveness, good and evil, etc.)
I think you should further study someone's religion before you have the nerve to insult it, after all you athiests are apparently going to die then become food for a tree....I don't know how I would deal with having this long, painfully beautiful life that ends in me becoming a tree... - A month ago
Answerer
I am not insulting anyone's religion. Everyone has the right to believe in whatever they like, I personally don't believe in a God. If I offended you I am sorry, I was sharing my opinion which is exactly what this site is for. - A month ago
Being an athiest too, I consider the idea that after I die I'll become worm food, than become a tree, which in turn will die and become 'food' for something else... a great thing! That concept of never ending cycle to me is great, far greater than an eternal life somewhere with a "jelous" God who has the power to end suffering, but can't do it because it's not part of his plan? /boggle. - 20 days ago
I'm sorry, but unless Bill Maher can explain to me how the universe got here by creating itself (which is a true miracle, as NOTHING has been proven to create itself from nothing in our universe. A God that could make the universe would be beyond our understanding and therefore to ask where he comes from is pointless), I believe God exists.
You may not believe in a particular God, but please don't be fooled by Bill Maher, of all people, into thinking this universe made itself. And just to make a point on Christianity pertaining to the film, he says that Jesus was made up because there are stories very similiar to Jesus' story before the Bible was written.
Well if you know anything about the Bible, it tells you that Jesus was prophesized WAYYYYY before he ever existed and wayyyyy before the New Testament came out. If you don't know, the Old and New Testaments have a good gap between when they were written and also the stories written in the two have big time differences.
So it is very much plausible that people gave Jesus a different name and wrote down stories about a man who would die and rise in three days. That is certainly not enough evidence to throw out the validity of the Bible, nor is the fact that there are evil people in this world who use what they want to as a way to kill, rape, and torture others.
Thank you for your thoughts, however your whole point is contradicting in itself. - 2 months ago
Answerer
That is what I call a lack of evidence. Not to be rude just in case I had a nasty tone in my response (sorry, I get passionate^^; ) but how was it contradictory? - 2 months ago
Question Asker
Passion is a good thing sometimes. Your focus was on Maher and not the sources he used. Maher on his own is a comedian. You may know the bible, but you don't acknowledge how the story of jesus was told by civilizations that pre-date christ and his prophecies. That tells me you need to take another look objectively at history. "Live by Jesus' example, not by other humans." This is contradicting because the story of Jesus is has a lot of human elements. Now come here and give me a hug! - 2 months ago
No one really knows where all this came from. but I think I would rather trust the guys in the lab coats who are not demanding I get up every sunday morning to apologize for being a human. - 2 months ago
Answerer
Question Asker: That is exactly what I'm talking about :S Maybe you misunderstood me. I'm saying, basically, the other stories stem from hearing about Jesus, not Jesus coming from these other stories. And Jesus was a human, but he was perfect. He followed every commandment, something no other human could ever say they did. That's what I mean. - 2 months ago
Answerer
Mikethebear: Again, just because they are in lab coats (which many are religious, btw) doesn't mean they are objective. You cannot name me ONE human being who is truly objective. The "guys in lab coats" brought us these things that are PROVEN to be frauds/false: the fake embryology chart, the Piltdown man. blood-letting (God said blood was the source of life so this would obviously be stupid), Nebraska man, abiogenesis (which has never been proven and ridiculous), the big bang (a big joke)...... - 2 months ago

.....Pluto being a planet (just had to throw that one in!), and many ridiculous medicines and such, including attaching goat balls to human beings, thinking this would cure something. And it isn't just old science at fault!
Pluto was a planet in MY lifetime, and I'm 21. And don't you always hear those quiet commercials about the new "Greatest medicine" causing people to kill themselves or die of heart attacks? Science, even now, is very flawed. It's good for some things, needs work for others - 2 months ago
Well, if you follow science the earth got here by The Big Bang Theory....check out it. It says that everything basically started from one particle and evolved into what we have today. You may not agree with this and that is fine and your opinion but you have no proof good created anything either. Look at all the plants and animals that evolve today, and Big Bang isn't Bill Maher's theory lol. - 2 months ago
Answerer
My point is WHERE did that particle come from? Are we to believe it just created itself? I don't know how else to explain my point. Either there is a God or the universe is eternal, therefore making the universe Goid. No one has yet to give me an answer as to how the universe could come about by completely natural causes. - 2 months ago
How, exactly, does saying "God made it" make it any less of a mystery? If it's implausible that the "universe started from nothing" (which is NOT what the big bang theory says, btw). Than how is "God made it" a 'lesser' miracle?
Science says the universe, as we know it, started with the big bang, which was a rapid expansion from a singularity of all matter, time, and 'forces'. At this stage, what came before, we simply don't know. What we don't do is go "well, God did it" with no evidence. - A month ago

I never saw the film and I am sure it would be a waste of my time, so I don't intend to see it. God exists. Whether or not science can prove it does not alter the reality of the existence of God. In a courtroom eyewitness testimony is a very strong form of evidence. In qualitative research observational and experiential evidence is become more widely accepted. Knowledge about God is primarily experiential. We have to experience God, and he has to reveal himself to us. But he does not reveal himself or his works to the casual skeptic, the dubious critic, the insincere cynic. Those with honest questions and sincere and diligent efforts to find God are the ones who come to know him, and can affirm that they know by personal experience. For vicarious experiences the Bible is full of them.
Such an open mind. What's funny about this is your the one yammering on about god, but you choose to remain anonymous. That's reallly sticking to go your guns in the name of jesus. Give me a break. If your fragile mind can't handle the criticism of validating the claims your religion makes. then the only time wasted is yours. There are many like you who bury their head in the sand for fear they have lived a whole life that was a lie. - 2 months ago
Answerer
Nice try. Your insecurity and bitterness oozes with everything you say. I post anonymously for a variety of reasons, but it has nothing to do with fear of criticism of my beliefs. Your attempts at making this personal and trying to insult me actually just reveals your own insecurity and the weakness of your position. - 2 months ago
You seriously don't think that science can't prove "god" wrong? explain to me how it is possible that the world was created in 7 days. That is literally IMPOSSIBLE. - A month ago
Okay, I know someone is going to attack me for saying this but I don't give a shit...I went to a Catholic school from Kindergarten til 9th grade. Learned the bible, religion and all that la-dee-da bullshit. Never did any of it sound logical to me. I mean honestly, Jesus died to forgive our sins, but if we sin we can still go to hell. Live your life righteous and be this way or you can't get into Heaven. Jesus loves everyone. I mean how many contradictions are there. It always pissed me off. So, I was watching a documentary on the History Channel a few years back and it was about the bible and Jesus and all that jazz. It talked about how many of the Apostles were known to eat mushrooms back in the day. They were a popular dish. Not mushrooms that we eat for nourishment, you know trippin' shrooms. That makes sense. They were tripping when the wrote everything in the bible. None of that shit made any sense at all. Still doesn't. Them tripping does. Okay, so attack me. I know you will. I saw it on the History Channel. I understand the bible is a metaphorical book but people take is so literally. Anyways...About my beliefs on God. I do believe there is something, a higher power. But I believe in Darwinism, not that we are each God's own special creations. Sorry, just don't. People have sex and procreate. It really isn't a miracle. We aren't all created in his likeness because if we were and he is so great there wouldn't be so many assholes in the world. Yeah, yeah temptation. Why if I am created in your likeness are you going to tempt me. Do you want me to mess up? Just is too much to think about. I try to live my life everyday the best person that I can be and that is the end of it. I never did see the film, but I would like to see it...now that I just went off on a useless rant lol...

I haven't seen the whole thing because I got annoyed.. as I was agnostic before watching it .. lol so I felt like I had better "proofs" or "questions" to point out to the religious people then he did lol.. but I agree with him.. I saw the route the movie was going , and I recently bought the dvd have yet to sit and watch it. It is crazy to me.. how people lack the logic to realize some of these things.. yet.. the lack of logic is why someone who believes in religion period... is not jewish, christian, and muslim at the same time. lol.. I mean its really odd. But I am thankful for growing up in a family that was always open to such ideas.. my grandmother was catholic, and my grandfather was jewish.. lol so there was always these discussions in the end.. my family has veered toward buddhism now.. and not as a religion but as a way of life.
I haven't seen the movie, but after reading the entire Bible as a kid, I thought to myself, God didn't inspire this, man did. Maybe there is a God, but I'd be more inclined to believe one as a deist does...one that does not care, doesn't feel a need for worship, etc. However, because I cannot prove that God either, I'm an agnostic.
By the way, I did see the previews for the movie. I have also read Dawkin's "God Delusion." I have also watched countless vidoes on youtube by atheists, agnostics, diests, Christians and Muslims. Not one of the religious were able to supply anything better than faith based answers.
I have put this as anonymous, but you can know who I am when I say, "Ok, I'll marry you, but I don't want to live in California." You rated and commented my reality check. ha ha
My question for theists (Christians in particular) is "What are the 10 commandments". If they can get that right and explain it to me I might listen. Confused? Read Exodus 20 and 34.
10th commandment: Thou shalt cook a kid(baby goat) in it's mother's milk.
Must remember that. - 20 days ago

Im in the middle with it I feel like I'm leaning more on the not real side, None of it makes sense! How can he create the world? who created god? who created the guy who created god it goes on and on. How can you have a kid without being pregnant[mary] None of it really makes sence. I feel like the idea of god was created in times of hope and somethign to belive in when there is noting to belive. I don't know if you belive in ghosts or spirits but I do and if there was heaven why aren't they there. Our world is a crazy place and I higly doubt god created it. Say there was a god if I'm correct god wasn't around in cavemen times and how did those people get here? I could talk about this forever!
Be not discouraged about answers that can't be given from humans. We are not all-knowing! But because we can't give you the answer, doesn't mean it doesn't exsist. Thats when faith comes in... I know it doesn' t make sense, and to be honest, God said that his ways aren't our ways. So your confusion is very understood.

That has to be the best thing I've heard : ] - 9 months ago
However I think I'm kind of a hypocrite because I am more than willing to believe in science. I want to believe that God made the world, the universe and all of us and in some ways I do. But I also love to rationalize things and I have to say that science makes a lot of sense.
So I guess in a literal sense I believe in what science tells us, but in a symbolic and religious way I believe in God and Christ and in what the Bible tells me. So I feel guilty for my division of thoughts, and although I can choose to either believe in God or not or to believe in science or not, I'm leaving my beliefs as it is and when I die I'll find out what's what.
Personally I also think believing in something superior to us is smart, and that having a religion allows us to be more morally correct with ourselves.
I think that a person should be allowed to believe in what they want to and not have someone else always forcing them to believe in something.
I too am big on logic, but what I know is what they say is an estimated guess... They are not 100% sure about how anything was put together. One thing I love, is when they actually come together to prove stories that the bible told are true. I disagree with about people being forced also. I don't think people force you, or at least I know I dont. I'm just very passionate about what I believe. & I strive to relate my understanding to all.
Religion is a choice, you aren't just born catholic, or christian. Another reason I don't like religion is because of my family feud. My dads side is catholic, my moms side is christian. the two sides hate eachother, my dad doesn't even like his side because he was forced to go to chuch every sunday. If he or any of his 13 brothers and sisters even thought of not wanting to go to church, they're father would make them lean against the wall only supporting theirselves with their fingertips. - A month ago
Even though my parents are Christian, I've always wondered whether God was real. I also challenged the beliefs that the Bible presents, and I have found that (through much thought) I am atheist/agnostic. I don't know if God exists, but I don't feel that I can believe in someone who is all-powerful and yet allows terrorism, wars, hungers, deprivation of human rights etc. I understand Christian beliefs and I think they're really great for us to think about, but for me religion isn't the answer.
Instead of religion, I have faith in music. It pulls you through all kinds of shit and I feel that if I could turn music into a universal religion, I would.
I too love music, and I too have wondered the same things you are wondering... how how how... I see you too have challenged God's word... We are alike in many ways, because we are human... But unlike you I found the answers... Not all of them, but enough of them to keep my faith, and I urge you to do the same. The answer? The answer for what? So many things have been proven to have happened. Your just not looking hard enough. Don't Give Up.

There is a God, no if ands or but's about it. God created the world and everything in it, he sent his son Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so we might have life. No matter what the film say only believe what the bible says. The devil comes to deceive many and many have been deceived by this film. If you haven't already accepted god into your heart do so now, its simple just say
"Dear lord Jesus come into my heart and save me now, I repent of sin, I'm sorry lord, I accept you as my savor and as the master of my life, jesus is now my lord, heaven is my home forever and ever amen".
It isn't just enough to say it, you have to believe it with all your heart. Now since you excepted the one and only true living God, you can join a church and study up on the bible because the bible holds the answers to all.
Ok, great. So you obviously believe in Christianity, So now what? Here's my problem with this. I just can't simply believe something that my reasoning tells possibly isn't true at all. I don't think the film is an act of the devil. I think the film has angered many devout believers because it questions Religion. I appreciate your concern, but I'm still remaining Agnostic. - More than a year ago
Ok, awesome. So now what? You have to know that our ways, aren't his ways. My reasoning tells me much, but reread what she just wrote about the devil. The devil comes to steal, kill, and destroy. & it begins with your faith in God. You honestly have to open your mind alittle more. The film is just about a guy confused. I understand why he's confused. I pray to God to show you a sign...

To comment about the santa thing, there is proof that there is a God. first of all who do you think created u, wakes you up every morning. and prayer works too, what about when some one was in a bad condition and the doctors say it is no way they will live, but they end up living for longer than expected and every ones wondering how is that possible. but what they don't know is that that person had faith and was praying and has been prayed for. God answers prayers. - 9 months ago
Although I am definitely a Christian, I would probably find this film interesting. I would like to see other points of view.
I am not going to try and make you believe in God-- but I will say that it truly is a wonderful feeling knowing that you have an amazing Being looking after you. You are never alone- God is always with you and if you put all of your truth in Him, he will take care of you. Christianity is just a wonderful thing and I love it and I bet you would like the positive energy given off by believers.it just makes you feel like the earth is not the screwed up place that it is.
I like your point here. However, I'm not willing to trade the freedom and positive energy I get from not supporting an organization that has been the reasoning behind countless wars, civil rights abuses, that also has no tolerance for homosexuals. My demographic is White, educated, heterosexual male. I will not support any group that has abused mankind for so long. - More than a year ago

Okay well I can see where you are coming from. Christianity is definitely limiting and has little tolerance for things it opposes. And sure, Christians have abused mankind in a way I guess, but what group hasn't abused mankind at one point in time? What you have to focus on is the billions of lives Christianity has impacted for the better. - More than a year ago

I was reading through your answers and although I don't agree with what you say, you state your points well. - More than a year ago
I would love to see how Christianity has abused mankind. By telling them What the Lord has said? Don't shoot the messenger. For it isn't me who has created these "truths" by which the world should live. I just know in my heart that if everyone lived by these truths, the world would be a better place. But never have I or any, forced this belief upon the world. Just as the US has laws we should live by. They are to prevent chaos. Prevent the devil.

you can't tell if God is real from "learning" or whatever, sure it helps but how you truly know is by experiance, and I have defiantly had one so a movie won't change my mind
In my opinion, you can tell he's there from learning. I do believe in a higher being, because once you study the make-up or our bodies, particle physics, how our planet works...I can't see such a level of organization occuring out of the blue. I rationalize God's existence in that manner. - More than a year ago
Question Asker
In some respects you can. Especially when Religious people try to teach their beliefs against science. A hand writtnen Bible should not replace actual scientific fact. That's the problem here. This gap will widen as technology advances. The bible is a book of mythological accounts from over 2000 years ago. Eventually It will not be able to compete with the ever increasing developments in Sciences and Technology. - More than a year ago
I concur... In many ways, the bible is the first history book. Its not made up of any thing mythical. Just because you weren't there, doesn't make it unbelievable. You weren't there when the scientist made their "guesses". SO what makes their word stronger than the bible's? Because they attempted to explain and draw pictures?
Please... You really should get the facts... Lean not on your own understanding....

What a joke! I don't get mayers or whatever video. I think that everyone should live thier lives as they wish but we all should remember that even if we question the existence of God we should at least believe and see what will happen at the end.
I'm not uderstanding you here. If I choose to live however I want to live, then why do I need God in the first place. What purpose would he serve if I can live without him. Also If I am living as I wish then the end is just the end. It would be silly to live your life like a casino bet. - More than a year ago
But a casino bet is what your doing... Your betting that christ doesn't exsist. Although you don't choose to recognize him, he still shows you mercy and grace. Because he loved you first... Words will never be enough to allow a person to see the truth. Again I Pray for a sign. Until you die, you will never know the feeling of not having God watch over you.
I don't understand why you always write Sincerely A Loving Black Man. What are you trying to prove, and why? You don't see anybody else writing anything like that. - A month ago
this one's tough because, from my christian point of view, I am very upset with this video. But it think it may be too much to send HATE mail. Sending a kind letter about why you disagree shouldn't be a problem though, the video is about what they disagree on so shouldn' we have an opportunity to tell them what we think. I don't know about being jewish or muslim, but being christian is all about being kind to people, no matter who they are or what they do, with our beliefs god made everyone and we shoudl treat everyone and love everyone as our own brothers and sisters. So hatemail is defidently unchristian, these are just passionate christians who need to try and gain some control of themselves adn realize that the world doesn't always like christians and the way we act.
But the problem is, while Christianity for you is kindness and morality, for many it is hatred. Ever seen the ones boycotting soldier's funerals? Those who persecute anyone different?
Maher is saying that religion has taken over to a point that is unreal, and is causing the loss of innocent lives, and we need to stop letting ideology get in the way of morality. At least that is what I took from it. - More than a year ago

Some christians are just crazy, no way to explain it.and see that's what christianity is about that's what it says in the bible and everyhting. these christians are jsut going overboard and need to get it together, we know, but it's not our fault really. - More than a year ago
Question Asker
It's not your fault. It's the fault of christ. Without this Christ guy or God or whoever he likes to call himself, there would be no crazy christians. Without Allah, no crazy muslims, etc. Religious followers are crazy as a result of their behavior that is based on nothing but a maybe. That's crazy. Would you let a man who has AIDS have sex with you while wearing a condom? Maybe you won't die from it? So why do all this other crazy stuff on a maybe? - More than a year ago
Why do all this stuff on a maybe not? & your crossing the line of disrespect by blaming faults. The number one thing that's promoted by Christ is Love. Jesus is a symbol of love. Some christians don't have all the facts. They have the passion, but not all of the knowledge. Thats human error, not Christ's. "In all things get understanding". While many may feel that Maher is confused, the love for him is always present, so we attempt to offer understanding.
Well I believe we definately need religion sometimes, it gives us hope and something that encourages us that death is not the final full stop.
I also think that religion is like an 'invisible pink unicorn'. This is how I see religion- Invisible Pink Unicorns are beings of great spiritual power. We know this because they are capable of being invisible and pink at the same time. Like all religions, the Faith of the Invisible Pink Unicorns is based upon both logic and faith. We have faith that they are pink; we logically know that they are invisible because we can't see them.
While this may be true that it encourages us that death is not the final stop, Religion also hinders our socioevolution. think about it. If we feel that this life we are in is not nearly as rewarding as our afterlife in heaven with a god, then where is the motivation to progress here and now. I recommed you check the film out and let me know what you think? - More than a year ago
So we have no hand in hindering socioevolution... Its very easy to just blame the negative results on something. As far as needing "religion" sometimes, I can't agree to that either... God is always protecting, so we need him even when we don't think we do. Again I pray for a sign to make you all believe.
And something I forgot to say, which you might find interesting.
In one of my basic Historiography classes, we were studying Christian Historiography, mainly St. Augustine. A student referred to the three Abrahamic faiths as mythology (as he is used to because his undergrad was folklored and mythology) and a student jumped all over him about it. This had happened in a few classes, and they eventually had to tell her to sit down and shut up because as historians, we refer to all religion as mythology due to the amount of them we deal with and the lack of historical proof of any one religion being correct. So beware calling it a myth! Or you just might turn out like some of my classmates, who almost got beaten up over it.

He won't be attacked. Please... well at least not by christians. Its hard to forget what they did to Malcom... Hes saw the truth, and began to be a Christian. I can't speak for all forms of "religions"
You never heard about the Inquisition? About burning witches and Jews and heretics and atheists?Well, I got some news for you: it was never disbanded by any pope. It just changed its name. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) (Congregatio pro Doctrina Fidei), previously known as the Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Roman and Universal Inquisition, and sometimes simply called the Holy Office is the oldest of the nine congregations of the Roman Curia. The actual pope was rector - 7 months ago
I copied the above from wikipedia but you can find it at Roman Catholic sources too.
The Inquisition was done by Christians. So was the Holocaust. (Hitler was a Christian and organized the Kristall nacht on the anniversary of antisemite Luther.) Stalin was a devout Christian and a bad Communist, as bad a communist as a bad Christian.
The genocide of American natives was done by Christians. So was slavery. Slavery is in the Bible. - 7 months ago

I'll agree with most, but Hitler actually followed an ancient paganistic religion that had mixed undertones of cultural Christianity. - 7 months ago
I love Bill Maher and this is on my to-watch list. I'm not agnostic, but I don't follow mainstream religion. I believe something created this earth, some God, but I don't believe the crap that has been added in, the hellfire and brimstone, or the edicts they set to live by. Religion denies the truth that, deep down, we're animals with instincts. And I live in a very religious area, where anything different is sinful, and to me that's just bigotry in action.
But what really gets me, and pushed me away from all mainstream religion, is the folks who push their way on the rest of us. So what if you don't agree with homosexuals, abortions, evolution, etc.? Maybe I do. And maybe I don't want to have to live by someone else's rules. No one is forcing you to go out and take part, we just want our rights to live the way we see fit. I have my own faith, which tells me what I need to be and need to know. Live and let live, treat others how you wish to be treated, be kind to your fellow man.that's all I need. Basic morality and my own spirituality.
Then, it was my education. I'm a history grad student, so religion is something we study a lot as it is a major motivational factor in the human experience. Religion is responsible for so much war, persecution, and hatred that I grew to loathe it. And when I approached my pastor then, he couldn't answer my questions other than to say it had changed. Well, it hasn't. People still bomb abortion clinics. Extremists hijack planes, try to deny me my right to birth control at the pharmacy, and call me a whore for living with a guy before marriage. That sounds no different than the crusades, the Atlantic Slave Trade Christian ideology, burning and banning books that taught real science.
So I'm done with it. If anyone would like to know, I'm Gnostic. That means I do believe in God and Jesus, but I have a much different approach to life on this planet and life after death. And as long as my family understands, and I can make peace with my God and my spirituality, I'm good.
I think you are on the verge of being right where I am already. I will tell you it is really a liberating feeling and a new found sense of empowerement to tell these people they are flat out wrong. I agree with everything you present here. I offer just a friendly suggestion. Shed your skin of religion, you don't need it, and I know your smart enough to realize that. Go see Maher's film and let me know what you think. It is an eye opener for sure. - More than a year ago

I'm sure I am, and sometime rationale plays with it. But I can't help but feel we're not some cosmic accident, we're planned. Something created us, be it a God or an all powerful mother nature, the spirit of the earth. I've reconciled my intelligent thinking with my spirituality and come out happier for it. It's unconventional, but it's me. But I am going to see the film.
Whats's with the update 15 days ago? What happened?
Anyway, I have not seen Maher's movie and I don't care to. I have a problem with people who try to force their views on others and have no proof behind it. No one on Earth can tell you whether or not there is a God and present it as a fact. I say let everyone believe what they want to believe (unless it puts others in danger aka extremist views) and not force opinions on anyone.
I have seemed to notice that those that do not believe do not have any argument based upon there none belief. I believe completely and any questions that you have I would love to hear. Their are many different forms of proof that show us he is there. The way I see it is, every single creation requires a greater being. For example; a painting is just a piece of paper previously before being formed into a painting by someone with the mind and ability to do so. An egg never came first because there needs to be a greater being to create it, the only thing greater than an egg is a chicken and above that is only god.
God as you know has never been seen in physical form but just like every single one of us we do not have the mind to even comprehend something so great. God chooses not to show himself because we as humans were given a free will transcended from God. This free will allows us to think and when you think you begin to question things, it’s only natural, so the way you feel is understandable. God does not show himself because he wants us to find things out for ourselves. When Eve took the apple from the tree, this was a direct disobedience of God’s word which Eve chose to disobey. This was because she was not a mindless creature. She had a free will to do as she wishes and this free will allowed her to do what she was not meant to do. Now, if every single one of us is just the product of evolution, then where did all these different morals come from such as, hate, love, affection and agony. all these things are not relevant and have no benefit to an animal that has been instinctively designed to follow an evolutionary clinch so why do we as humans need these feelings if it is not necessary and needed. This contradicts the reality of how things are.
The bible as a whole is important but it is not Gods proof book. The bible presents truth that gives us the insight into God and himself but it is the word of those that know of him. It is not necessary but supports the theory of God. I am a firm believer in God but I do however acknowledge the doubts and I have noticed none of them seem valid.
Some points to think about: 1. Those who believe that the big bang theory as a theory that god was not needed don’t seem to consider that although this was the beginning of the universe. I ask you, how can something be created out of nothing if there is nothing there to create it?. According to scientific facts the universe had a beginning 14 billion years ago. The universe coming from nothing just does not seem logical to me. However, the first verse of the bible states “In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth”. So this means that God created the universe as the source. This actually fits with scientific facts. As for something to exist, there needs to be a cause and as we before the universe, there was nothing.
2. God accounts for the order, complexity and design that is evident in the universe. The universe as you know from science exhibits amazing order, complexity, regularity and intelligibility. The anthropic principle is that "nature is fine tuned to ensure human life" this backs the theory that the universe is the product of a cosmic designer as all the cosmos are organised and all fit perfectly almost as if they was crafted to be as they were. this works with what the book of proverb - A month ago
2. God accounts for the order, complexity and design that is evident in the universe. The universe as you know from science exhibits amazing order, complexity, regularity and intelligibility. The anthropic principle is that "nature is fine tuned to ensure human life" this backs the theory that the universe is the product of a cosmic designer as all the cosmos are organised and all fit perfectly almost as if they was crafted to be as they were. this works with what the book of proverb which states "bywisdom the lord lay the land s and the earth’s foundation by understanding he set the heavens in place" yet if you reject the logical reason that god stands behind the universe as an explanatory hypothesis then you must conclude that all the order, complexity and intelligibility in the universe is ultimately the result of chance and coincidence. Which again does not make sense as if the big bang meant that everything magically fit in place is a so well organised manor and managed to just somehow work so well. I can't seem to see how reliable and possible that is.
The belief by atheist is that: chance + something coming out of nothing = nature and evolution of the entire universe and everything in it. this just does not seem logical to me sorry
God does not control us but every bad deed has a bad result. If bad things had no consequence or bad emotion then why is that?. Can you give me a reason because I cant. Good deeds have good results. I have watched that film before and I have noticed that those that he speaks to are not so knowing of their belief the interviewer who you are taking serious is a comedian and he does not present any valid facts. He draws evidence from no source and as you noticed he does not do a real interview. He only sees one point and there is always two sides to every story.
we as people were left alone by god to live without god and look at the result. All these wars, hatred against each other which are the result of us living with our own self given free will emotions. I am not a very firm believer in hell myself. peace out and god bless
I saw the film, I agree with Maher, but I thought it was a terrible movie. Sure it was funny, and I even enjoyed it, but it was incredibly lopsided and not really a good debate.
The best parts of it was the interviews with the ?priest? outside the Vatican, and the priest astronomer. I found it funny that those two had the most liberal Christian views, and yet were probably the most senior of all the religious leaders.
I consider religion a global cancer. But hey, I'm an amoral atheist so what would I know.
PS. If you're an Intelligent Design supporter, I suggest watching the God Darwin and Design - Ken Miller videos on youtube.
Okay, I'm an atheist and I feel offended when people say we need God to live decent lives, If you really study the bible in depth it says most people go to hell, even tho they lived "good" lives *theres a million things wrong with this but I'll leave you to ponder that. the fact is that Jesus was not unique, he bares striking resemblances to other pagan, pre-Christian deities (the zeitgeist movie has some great info on this). Infact right where the vatican stands today, there stood a temple to dionysus, a greek saviour who is quoted as having said: "he who will not eat of my body and drink of my blood, so that he will be made one with me and I with him, the same shall not know salvation". Dionysus also: -was considered God made flesh, -born of the virgin Osirius and God, called "son of god" -born in a humble cave on decemver 25th and visited by 3 shepherds, -calls disciples to be "born again" in baptism -turns water into wine at a wedding -dies at eastertime asa sacrafice for the sins of humanity -he desecends to hell, rises on the third day -he ascends to heaven in glory -his followers await his judegement in the end times -was celebrated by the symbolic eating of bread and wine This is only one example, there are plenty, plenty more. Even going back to Egypt, the god horus also shared striking similarities. Do some research, you'll be shocked. This also isn't some new conspiracy theory, Thomas Paine even wrote about these findings. Also, the verdict is not out that Jesus was real. The only solid historical record that mentions Jesus of Nazareth is from a historian named Josephus. This document is regarded as a forgery by many experts, there is a lot wrong with it. I don't know how the Bible came about but I'm sure it was a real mess, many books were left out forpolitical reasons. Also the Roman Church destroyed many other Christian sects at the time. The Roman Church became the Catholic Church and its orthodox and protestant branches. Many will say these other christians were heretics butmany had just a legitimate claim. Many were wiped out for political reasons, Emperor Constantine called the Council of Nicea (where trinity and other doctrines were created, accepted by almost all Christians today) to unite his armies under one creed. There also lots of Christian ideas not elaborated in the bible (the trinity) but were created by the roman empire, many pagan customs are present in Christianity today (christmas etc.). Religion changes a lot and morphs. Just remeber a christian is an atheist to all other past gods. My advice: look for the good in religion and don't be afraid to condemn the bad things. Religion can have negative and positive affects on ppl. develop an internal moral compass, not an external. do good because you love goodness not because god says so.
I did not see the movie. :-S If there was/is a God he would first have to prove he 's not the Stalin-like one the Bible tells about: link
link link link ________________________ -Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. -Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. -Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? -Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?" _____________(Epicurus, Greek philosopher 341 BC - 270 BC) And how would one know it is not Satan who created a god? (if Satan existed!)
PS I want this to be clear: I understand people who believe in a god and IMHO they are NOT ridiculous nor dumb. Most of them are good people, IMHO. I have read the Bible and I have read the Torah and I have read the Qu'ran. I have them here, close to my desk, in several languages. This means I value them, but at their worth.
I haven't seen it, but being an Atheist myself I probably agree with Maher's ideas. I'm not even an Agnostic, like I just don't think there is anything.
I never saw the film and I probably never will. While I believe most people probably misunderstand the true nature of God in his entirety, and many ideas within many religions are invented rather than revealed, there is no doubt in my mind that God exists.
well that's call idols. people that steal away the love of christ because they don't believe in him. he is real and if you would give church a chance and relly yield yourself to god you will see for your self. everyone has a time in there life where someone shares the love of christ with them. after that they are accountable because they heard the good news. you can either choose to follow and live forever in heaven or rerfuse and live in anguish and pain and sorrow and be judged when the time comes and be sent to hell to burn forever. its ur choice I'm not gunna get upset because its the love of christ that show people he is real. he loves you to but he hates the sin of not believeing. I have seen people be healed of cancer and not have it in them at all . and its all because they believe and give there lives to him. read the bible there's things in there that say things that are going on in the world right now. how could that be written in the 13th century and the thingss that are wrote are happening. that's no lie see for yourself. one example is it says that when the return of jesus is near there will be wars and signs of wars, nation against nation person against person, look at the reality everyone is starting wars with each other more people are killing than ever, because he wrote it and its happening I'm not making it up look for yourself. I'm not answering this to make you mad or for you to no who I am. its so that you can see the love of christ coming from me. that I'm just trying to share something that can change ur life for ever. its alll about him. not me or you or anyone of us
This almost had me in tears... Good write man... Best answer so far... still reading...

I was born and raised Roman Catholic and am very faithful to this day. First of all, no I'm not gonna yell at you or say that you're going to hell or anything of that stupid BS. My main reason for believing in God is that if you look at all (correct me if I'm mistaken) the ancient cultures in the world they have some sort of religion or god. I don't think this is coincidence. I've been scolded and looked down upon by priests because I mention the possibility that all religion's gods are one and the same. True people may argue that people invented gods to explain what they could not. That could be a very valid explaination. I don't take the bible literally at all. Example. God made the world in 7 days. VS Evolution. My view on that subject is how are we sure that God's days are the same as our days? hey, people in the bible apparently lived over 400 years. So obviously the time scales got warped somewhere somehow.
I haven't heard of the film at all. Is it a local production? Where may I find it?
Religion needs to be seperated indefinietly from all forms of government. You can be whatever faith you want, just not at my expense or others who no longer want to be held hostage in countries controlled by religious based legislation. Religion needs to placed in its respective place as part of our history. It does not need to take an active role in law making. Man must accept that science and rational thought are of far better service to our preservation than myth fueled by the fanatical. - More than a year ago
Answerer
Science and rational thought are good things, but are only 2 things, and the whole of reality cannot be based only upon that. Reality must be based upon truth. And to say "this is true and that is not" is to create seperation, and seperation leads to dissention and dissention leads to conflict. And no one wants conflict.
Do you feel threatened by christians or religion? - More than a year ago
Question Asker
Wh yes I do feel threatened by Christians. I feel threatened By Muslims, Jews, and pretty much anyone who has acess to nuclear weapons who is willing to believe that the world is going to end based on a guy who we don't know for sure really even exists. look, Religions have a place in society, that place is seperate from making or influencing laws that govern everyone's right to live as they please. What we have is here is what I call "Christiannunism" in the U.S. - More than a year ago
Answerer
That is interesting, because the true nature of Christianity is to be peaceful and show love to everyone especially those who believe differen't because we are "ambassadors of Christ" who was one of the most peaceful and loving people in history. That means Christians havn't been doing their work right and I am really sorry about that. In my country its the other way around. I feel threatened by the dominant anti-christian movement and secularization. I could get chastized for having a faith. - More than a year ago
Good questions asked and I've been a fan of Maher's for many years. His central point is simply that in the times before science we had precious little to base our beliefs upon and in those days of relative ignorance it might have been acceptable, even warranted, to believe in a set of tales told to us by our elders who learned from theirs etc in order to enforce moralistic survival traits. Religions today still offer good moral codes. However it's the other stuff that's is difficult to support.
Today we have science and a vast many stories in the Bible can easily be shown to simply not be truth. There are a vast number of people who want to believe everything written in the assorted holy books simply because "they want to believe". Facts are irrelevent in matters of faith. My favorite was the oft repeated "God said it, I believe it, That settles it". This is precisely why had the Dark Ages and to my way of scientific thinking I am baffled why so many believe so many tales still today in light of how much has now been proven and by how many religious 'facts' have been disproven.
But religion is the opiate of the masses and Organized Religion is a very wealthy institute with very vested interests in remaining in that position. They will do ANYTHING to discredit science including creating their own pseudo science "Intelligent Design" which is rife with errors that ordinary people (sheep) are willing to overlook even when it's all pointed out in fine detail.
People WANT to believe so then they will believe despite anything Maher or you or I have to say about it.
There is actually a much larger conversation that could be had about this topic but I fear that this forum is not the correct place for it. And I'm a reformed Roman Catholic who now borders somewhere between agnostic and athiesm simply because as an seasoned mechanical engineer this is where ALL of the verifiable evidence has led me.
Good luck with this topic. I expect to be flamed within minutes, LOL.
Nah, I try to keep this topic as an open forumn for people just to express their thoughts. I agree with what your thoughts. The point Maher makes that is most disturbing to me is how the fanatcism aspect poses a very serious danger to our existence. Religion must die so man can live. - More than a year ago
Science is real but so is God. Without God we are dead, because then we are diminished in each others sight as scientific objects to be used and misused by authoritative figures and each other with no love or fear, because then there will be no relevance to law nor justice nor understanding nor feelings nor the relevance to life. Thus we will be dead. - More than a year ago
Question Asker
Aris, I see your point. I just disagree with it. All I'm trying to say is basically "What If?" What if your wrong. What I don't get is your point of no law or justice. That type of tyrannical despotism is happening all around the world at this very moment. Why does god sit on his almight ass while genocide and war rips Africa apart? The middle East, Southwest Asia, I can keep going, but I don't think I need to. Maybe is always better than nothing. - More than a year ago
The reason why there is tyranny in the world is because we have free will. We underestimate what we are and what our responsiblities are on earth. We have control, and with that comes great responsibility in choice and in action. So God gives us over to either do good or do evil, that is our choice. God could easily intervene, but then we would have to be controlled by Him, thus we wouldn't be able to choose good for goodness and fight for justice. And not be able to choose to love God. - More than a year ago
Question Asker
So let me get this straight. In Afghanistan, when people throw acid on young girls that just want to go to school, we should just consider it an act of free will and an underestimation of our responsiblilty? It's easy for you to say these things until your the one suffering. Where was Allah when these young ladies were attacked for wanting an education? I can tell you where Allah wasn't.....He wasn't keeping his manical followers from assaulting children. Yeah, Religion makes a lot of sense. - More than a year ago
That is not only an act of free will, nor only an underestimation of our responsibility but an injustice and tyranny to do things like that to girls who only want to go to school. But it remains their freewill and underestimation of responsibility non the less, and I promise you justice will be served in the end, either by man's hand or by God's hand. If they truly did follow God they would never even concider doing something like that. There is a difference between Religion and following God. - 11 months ago
I think from a spiritual perspective more people are saved in difficult times than they are in good times. I'm betting that all the jews that were persecuted during the nazi regime went to heaven after they died. I'm also betting that all the african slaves in the 1700's entered heaven for living a glorious self sacrificial existence while their masters (which outnumbered them 20 to 1, went to hell) God looks at the big picture: where we go after we die. we focus on the small things. - 11 months ago
Anger, hate, arrogance and killing are against biblical values and reason is favoured by God.
Rationalizing is a gift from God not a thing that just came into being automatically and up to man to use and misuse for his own selfish purposes, like finding Uranium and killing a million people, but then also using Uranium as a source of Power for millions. It is not what we use that is evil or good but how we use it.
We all have a concious. If God doesn't exist there would be no reason to have justice or to live moral lives or even to gain science or search for answers, thus there would be no reason for reason and we would do as we please and diminish ourselves to tribal warfare and rubble of our once mighty cities build upon these values because of selfish endevour. God loves science and technology and wishes us to excell in it and use it for everyones benefit, but then we shouldn't let go of the very one who gave us all these things but draw closer to him to gain more reason. To claim reason as a man made thing is untrue. Where does it come from?
I would like to watch this film to gain understanding, eventhough it would be painful I suspect.
Hey Aris, I'm glad your going to at least watch the film to get insight to the different viewpoint that Maher is presenting. Regardless of our differences I applaud you for that. Your at least willing to hear a different point of view. Hopefully more people of your faith will see your great example. At least be willing to hear what's presented and give it a chance. good stuff! - More than a year ago

Thank you very much. I wish the same thing for all people to search out all points of view thus coming to a better understanding of the truth, especially the closed minded church who are meant to be leaders in speaking and sharing the truth. - More than a year ago
Oh one thing. So many that say, can't know it for 100% sure, call them self agnostics even tho they don't believe that god exists. And that is bit wrong, they are atheists. Agnostic is pussied version of atheist, just doesn't dare to say "It is so unlikely that I don't believe in it".
I'm not agnostic about the teapot either, I can say that I just don't believe it is there, even tho can't be sure. Agnostic DOESN'T KNOW WHAT HE BELIEVES? It is so made up term, agnostic. Be atheist and call your self sceptic as a subtitle
I like the idea of skeptical atheist. I think that's what yours telling me here. You bring up a good point for sure. I do think regardless of our differences, Be it Atheist or Agnostic, we share a common desire not to ruled by religion being passed off as truth, science, and the social norm. People who are atheist should be more outspoken about their beliefs. I agree with your thoughts here. - More than a year ago
Not available in this corner of world yet, need to wait the DVD I fear. Cause quite possible it won't be seen in theaters in Finland. So I'm most likely put on my eye patch and pirate it like atheist that is completely lost with what is right and wrong. . .
I assume it'll be good, Maher is funny and there is so much to laugh at in religion.
The film is very good. There is a lot to laugh at in Religion, yet there is an emphasis Maher places on the dagerous combination of religion and weapons of mass destruction. Maher also explains that other industrialized nations, our european partners parted ways with their governments having excessive religious overtone like we still have here in the U.S. I'd your thoughts on Maher's speculation on that. - More than a year ago
Maybe if someone other then Bill Maher made it, it would be worth checking out. Regardless how much a dislike Bill Maher though, I'm sure he had some points worth discussion in his film.
He does for sure. Even if you don't like Maher I recommed it. It reminds me of when Michael Moore took heat for Farenheit 911. Not everyone agrees, and even Moore embellished some of the film, it was still a good catalyst for questioning Bush and his motives. Give it a shot and let me know what you think. - More than a year ago

Michael Moore is a joke and anyone who takes what he says or himself seriously isn't the brightest tool in the shed. - More than a year ago
Question Asker
It's not Moore himself that is brought into question, it's the material he presents. I like what Moore has to say and in a lot of instances I agree with his views. The downside to this is people get wrapped up in hating Moore instead of providing sound agruement and evidence to dispute his claims. - More than a year ago

I'm sorry but you too then must be a fool. Moore has no sound arguments or evidence in anything he brings up. - More than a year ago

I must be a fool as well by agreeing with Maher that religion is useless, and I agree with Moore that George W. Bush started wars for oil. Yep, I think you hit th nail on the head. In fact I think your the dumbass because you provide no facts to support your opinions. - More than a year ago

If that's what your opinion is after seeing the movie then you didn't take from it what Maher intended. Maher never says religious people are wrong, his point is that we just don't know, and that he'd rather not know and not kill, than pretend to know and kill each other.
In some aspects I did take it for what it was. Maher brings up a point that a large minority of Americans are rationalists. He makes a point that this minority group is relatively quiet, and that they shouldnt be any longer. At the very beginning of the movie he points out that he doesn't know but he has to make the effort to find out. In a few interviews I have watched with Maher recently he aimed for it to be a comedy mainly. I liked his suggestion encouraging agnostics to speak out. - More than a year ago
He quite often does. Tho he often uses word morons instead of wrong. He might say we don't know, but he sure says that it is clear that religious people didn't get it right. - More than a year ago
Answerer
It's his personal opinion, but he also realizes he could be wrong himself. That's his message. Anyone that says 100% god exists, or 100% god doesn't exist, is guilty. - More than a year ago
"100% god doesn't exist, is guilty" I have never met a person that would say that, and I know a lot of atheists (myself included). Sure, we can be 'pretty sure', but it would take omniscience to say "god does NOT exist" with 100% certainty.
Personally, I'm pretty sure God doesn't exist. Why? No evidence. But that doesn't mean I know it for fact. It does however mean, anyone that claims fact that they "know" god does/doesn't exist, I will argue with. Especially when their believe gets people killed - 20 days ago
