I have been a fire fighter for many years. I have been involved in everything from water rescue, house fires, wildfires, vehicle accidents, gas leaks, suicide attempts, rope rescue, and major disasters etc. Growing up I was also a lifeguard for many years, lost a few saved a lot more. I also worked for 911 dispatch when I broke my leg. I don't think of myself as a hero I just do a job. I feel obligated because not everyone who wants to do these professions can. My grandfather did it and even started up the Stl, MO fire fighters union, maybe it's in my blood. If I am given the mental ability, the physical ability and God has put courage in my heart am I really a hero or just made for this. My girlfriend calls me a hero. I just love helping people. What do you say?
Yes, you are a HERO! Yes, you chose your profession to help and serve others. You also have put this above all else in YOUR LIFE. You have put others upfront. I thank you for caring and using your ability. Just knowing that you are out there is more than you can realize. Yes, your girlfriend does know this. Give her a great big hug! I hope that your life continues with such zest and that you can in-turn build a fruitful and blessed life as what you provide daily to others.
Thankyou and you're welcome. The hardest part of my job is not all the physical or even emotional turmoils. The hardest part of my job is remembering it's a job and that I am not perfect. People will be lost and I know this first hand. I can't save everyone, but I will save everyone I can. That's what I try to live by. I will be sure to give my girlfriend a huge hug and a kiss. thankyou and bless you as well. - More than a year ago
Sounds like you've helped save lives, helped people in their times of need, was strong enough to lend a hand in life-death situations yet you still retain the essential essence of being humble. I'de say you are a hero. ;*)
I can't deny that being called a hero makes you feel; well, pretty amazing! However, I am not the only one out there doing it. I feel that those who have pushed it to the max and are no longer are the true heroes. Thankyou and I will do my best to continue to remain humble. Thankyou. - More than a year ago
well it might be part genetic, but hey not everyone who has the physical ability also has the courage to risk his life for others i would say that yea your a hero, even if you don't think so, we all like to think lower of ourselves and that's called being humble, but at some point we should give ourselves the credit, you should too =))
I give all credit to the man upstairs. He has blessed me with the physical and mental tools to perform this duty. I do like being called a hero from time to time. I can not deny that. However, my face will never be on a comic book cover or on the big screen fighting vilians. I do a job everyday, sometimes people notice sometimes they don't. I know people say that we fire men are the true heroes not batman and superman. Until my uniform requires a cape I will remain humble and thankful. - More than a year ago

You are not a hero. Stop trying to feed your ego. If you were this 'hero,' you wouldn't ask for confirmation even if you didn't think you were. The fact that you do makes you an egotistical tart. I hate people that takes jobs like this and does it for glory or seeks some kind of support and justification. Fire fighters save lives, so do EMTs and paramedics and nurses and doctors and people who build houses.
If you read my question you would have read I don't consider myself a hero. The reason for the question is to try and find out why others say that. Yeah I just do a job. I don't do it for a glory and if you ever took a job like this you would realize that. I think teachers are heros, I think my parents are heros, I think the guy who works hard everyday and provides for his family is a hero. I thank you for your honest opinion, I don't think you understand why I asked the question but thanks - More than a year ago

I don't think you understood why you asked that question. You say you are humble but your responses say otherwise. I've been in similar fields and that's why it annoys me. - More than a year ago
Question Asker
Well I agree the question is asked a lot but this is the first time it really hit me. I don't deny that some times it does feel good being called a hero, I do feel blessed to be a part of this profession. Being in the field then you should no where I'm coming from. It's hard for people to think your not doing it for the glory. You don't think of yourself as a hero but the second you ask why everyone is calling you a hero you appear arrogant. Sorry if I offended I was looking for some answers - More than a year ago
Maybe my superpower is courage at an extreme level. I don't know. I'm just thankful for being appreciated and being blessed with the ability to help others. I'm blessed to be that final and ultimate shoulder to lean on. thankyou for taking the time to read this and respond. Thanks. - More than a year ago
