I need to get in shape. I've tried different types of workouts but honestly anything physically strenuous, whether its working out in a gym, to playing sports, just makes me wish I was dead and want to strangle the first person I see, and to be honest, it really doesn't seem like it's worth it because if this is what exercising is like, I'd rather deal with the shortened life span that comes from being out of shape. But I'm not giving up yet until I've tried absolutely everything there is to try under the sun.
Anyone know any good exercises that might be a little less intolerable for someone who hates sports with a passion and hates doing generic exercises? Maybe something that might actually be fun?
I love jogging. I just hop on a treadmill at my university and we can change channels to whatever we're watching or just listen to an ipod. I guess the music is the only tolerable part lol. But sometimes I get bored of the gym and just jog around my neighbourhood or do exercises at home. I also do kickboxing, so you could try buying a punching bag at home or something. Or join a dojo and take martial arts, that's fun for me. ;*)
Try paintball, skiing, snowboarding, sledding, anything! Pretty much any activity in which you move will burn calories. This includes little things like walking and vacuuming. Maybe you could also get a Wii gaming system and get Wii fit. You'll be able to work out and not even notice.
Let me tell you, I know from experience that it's tough to get in shape, but it is well worth it. A life spent overweight is not really a life at all in terms of quality. Make the decision to get in shape and really commit. It may take you 6 months to a year to really get in the shape you want to be in, but if you think about it, that's SUCH a small portion of your entire life. As you lose weight and tone up you'll begin to feel way more energized and accomplished, and it will get easier, I promise!
The number one thing to remember is that one pound equals 3,500 calories, so If you can cut out just 500 calories per day through diet and exercise, you can drop a pound a week. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight, especially if what you eat is healthy and protein rich rather than full of carbs and fats.
If you want any more advice or if you have specific questions about working out and nutrition, I know a lot about both topics and would love to give you some more specific insight.
gyms aren't for squares wtf? I think its fun to go and you feel all happy and energized afterwards. They have a pool that people always go to at night and a lot of fun working out machines, Just listen to music and you won't even feel like your working out. And its also good to change up your meals up like one day you can have eggs with a piece of wheat toast, the next day a healthy cereal like special K with strawberries or chocolate (doesnt sound healthy) but it is and it taste great! :] and speakin of excercising I've been slacking I need to get back on track, but good luck! :D
I've always enjoyed aerobics - kickboxing, step, dance, cardio - whatever. I like music and I'm also very competitive. I have to outlast my fellow aerobic takers. I have to kick higher, punch harder, work harder than everyone. I see it as a personal goal to be better than everyone else. It's crazy I know, but whatever motivates me works.
I also love to dance. I mean out at a club. I can dance all night long - from 9 pm till closing. It's much easier to do the things you enjoy.
Remember as well, when you start off exercising, it's always harder to stick with it when you're in pain. You need to stick with it until you notice a difference - then when you have tangible evidence that your hard work is paying off, you don't want to go back to the way you were. Walking on a treadmill is a great way to build up your endurance. I take a good book, my MP3 player and get lost in my distractions. I don't even notice the sweating and burning - I'm too busy trying to figure out if the butler did it. Finding a friend to go with you can also help - you don't want to look like a wuss by quitting first, lol. As long as you're consistent - whatever you decide to do will give you results. Don't give up just because you hate it - try everything until you find something you can stick with.
It might no sound good at first but like.kickboxing and punching and stuff has helped me I was havin this same problem about a month ago and I got no good answers from here lol but I told my boyfriend that I wanted to loose weight and he has been pushing me ever since like.trying to fight me (playful) and we make up our own little routine thing so get a friend that you can be yourself around and try :D orrr turn your radio up as loud as you can and dance away and make up workouts
Take up karate, yoga, ballroom dancing, or swimming (or all of them!). These are ALL fantastic exercise, and they are most definitely not boring.
Swimming especially is a great calorie burner/muscle builder, so if you have an indoor pool anywhere nearby, take advantage of it. Even doggy paddling is better than nothing lol but try doing the breast stroke, freestyle, & butterfly. These tone your chest, arms, and abs; key spots for most guys. They aren’t bad for the legs either :D.
Yoga, karate, and ballroom dancing are good because they’re pretty sociable and scheduled, so you can’t back out of it!
Good luck! Comment/message me if you have other questions.
Swimming sounds doable, unfortunately I only have access to a pool during the summer months. - 11 months ago

Also, with karate (and I think yoga, too) you have to already be at a certain fitness level before you can even begin them, and I'm not quite there =( - 11 months ago

Well, try to hit the pool as much as you can during the summer. As for karate and yoga, as long as you're willing to do it, they can't stop you. They might not let you compete (competition is in karate only) but it's really not all that hard in the early levels...by the time you actually need to be fit, you'll be there lol. - 11 months ago
Try watching tv while your on a treadmill. It can really shed pounds the fastest. Now if you want to be toned, then also include a weight lifting regime in your routine.
You know, I've heard SO many success stories about Dance Dance Revolution. It is a costly thing to buy (If you have to buy everything) but it's 50$ for the game and a decent mat to play it on. It's varied in that you can play many songs, change the arrows themselves and you can track your calories as you go and be able to see how much you've burned altogether. You'll really feel like you're getting somewhere.
Of course I love it, but I've become an exercise fanatic. I've lost 70 lbs with the right diet and exercise, and you can do it too. :D
Ultimate Frisbee. Air soft (you can shoot people to help with your anger) Dodgeball (another great one to do to take out anger) check into Geocaching (a treasure hunt type thing)
The gym is definantly a self centered place to work out and concentrate on working on one's physic and health. Although I wouldn't go as far as calling these people pigs. Why am I at the gym? is my goal to help people or to keep myself in shape?
The idea of manual labor and volunteering time for helping people and maybe even helping passing out cans is nice but it's also a kumbiya story. Is he here to meet friends and do community service or is he here to lose weight?
I presented what worked for me at the gym, if he doesn't like it then he'll probably skip everything I said but maybe something I said may have intrigued him to try it my way.
Gym = Place of physical fitness, takes 1 hour.
Doing volunteer work = takes more then 1 hour to get the same amount of fitness. Sounds like a waste of time unless you have alternative goals then to lose the pounds but if he finds this more enjoyable whille losing his pounds, have at it.
He said working in the gym makes him want to be dead and to kill someone. Like you said, "What works for you isn't going to apply for everyone." It obviously didn't apply to him because it he said it doesn't work for him, but you just went and talked about yourself anyway. Volunteering is a waste of time? I still don't believe that gyms aren't for squares. - 11 months ago

"Volunteering is a waste of time?" if his primary goal is to lose weight, yep. - 11 months ago
Here's the problem, people who go to rehab come in two different forms:
1. "i need to quit" 2. "i want to quit."
You understand you need to get in better shape but you don't really want to. That's the first problem, as far as the rest of the way you look at it, you're already set-up for failure as you've somewhat given up hope.
Why don't girls like football? It's because they don't understand or have much insight about the game. Why don't certain people like cars? They have no clue how they work so it doesn't stimulate their brains.
See what I'm getting at? You have to understand what you're doing and how it effects your body. After that, you'll be much more productive and enthusiastic about working out.
Before I did research and started going to the gym with a game plan (not the wandering around and moving a few weight nonchalantly.), I wasn't very active and pretty much wasted time.
You don't need a personal trainer, all you need is a few hours on the internet researching people's workout log and copying their routine. After you can start to mold your own work out once you start finding things you like to do. All the different muscle workouts can be found on youtube.
Let me give you my current workout:
Tuesday - Arms and shoulders: Bicep tricep forearms
Shoulder Military press Flys
Thrusday - Legs chest back
Squat flat/incline/decline bench all the back machines
Sunday - cardio.
Every month I switch up what I do for each muscle group to keep it interesting and fun. I'm always in there with my mp3 players as it makes life in the gym much more enjoyable. Don't be afraid to ask people about their workouts, they are usually happy to tell you.
Remember, excercising is 50% of it, the other is your diet (it's not what you eat, it's what you don't eat).
Why don't people just do manual labor for money rather than pay for a gym? Or just run outside? Seriously, how about you get back to smoking marijuana and touching yourself to manginas. - 11 months ago

Gym, sports, yoga, running, hiking, moutain climbing or pallaties, all different forms of excercise and is different for everyone. I'm simply telling him what has worked for me which is the gym. "Keep in mind that gyms are for squares too." Right and yoga is for pussies right? Go f*** yourself along with your lack luster opinions about anything. What works for you isn't going to apply for everyone. Manual labor isn't a consistant activity unless you're going to sweep the earth free of dirt. - 11 months ago
This person clearly doesn't want to work out in a gym; he said so himself. Manual labor is generally defined as a repetitive, consistent activity, and it builds more than just physical appearance. Volunteering time in New Orleans or Cedar Rapids for disaster victims is necessary manual labor, and there are never enough volunteers. It builds teamwork, friendship (do it with friends), and for those generous enough, physical fitness. Gyms are for self-centered pigs and New Years resolutions. - 11 months ago
