You can get mace at a police supply store along with tazers and pretty much any other non-lethal defense weapon.
About not wanting a gun, I can see where you're coming from as to why you don't want one, but have you thought that the reason he was shot was because he couldn't shoot the other guy first?
If it comes down to you or the other guy it doesn't matter what your beliefs are, what your politics are or what your past is like, you do what needs to be done.
Not sure what country you live in. You can't buy mace in Canada and it's illegal to possess, however, you can buy bear mace in outdoor stores. It has the same active ingredients and effectiveness as the mace that the police carry.
Protecting yourself has more to do with common sense than having the tools to ward someone off. Don't get yourself in situations where defending yourself is necessary. Yes, there can be an event where even your common sense may not have prepared you for but in those extreme cases, having mace in your purse will not help you.
I live in the US and someone broke into my house while I was home.

Then an alarm system would be most beneficial to you. If affordability is a factor, then there are other methods to secure your house that make breaking in much more difficult and giving you time to phone the police.
Any sporting goods store will have mace. If your local mall has an Upper Edge Security Center or an oriental gift store they have it as well but they tend to be a bit pricey. Also local gun shops and the occasional gas station also should have mace.
Other items you could carry for protection is a small knife. In MOST states the legal knife that doesn't require a permit or license has a blade under 3 inches and if it's over 2 inches must have part of the clip showing. Personally I carry a 3 inch knife found at Wal-Mart sold for 2 bucks with it clipped on my back pocket so my knife is inside the pocket yet the clip shows outside.
If you'd rather not carry a weapon of any sort (some places like to confiscate them when you walk into the door like many government buildings and schools) you could also carry a whistle that you could blow and attract someone's attention.
Tazers have also become popular lately. Those can be found at all the places I referenced to find mace. Tazers are for the most part bulky and expensive though so I would not recommend one.
Guns. Get your concealed weapons permit and buy a gun at a gun store. If you don't want to get a permit or license check your state/country's weapons laws. Here in Colorado, USA you're allowed to carry a handgun as long as it's in a holster, the safety is on, and there's not a bullet in the chamber (meaning you have to **** the gun before it can fire). However every place is different. I would not recommend getting a gun because they can be heavy, people will stare if it's visible, and if you have an anger problem you might kill someone in a drunken/pissed off rage.
My ranking 1. Mace (easiest to use and if on keychain it's constantly accessible) 2. $2 knife from wal mart (cheap, amazingly sharp, useful when you need a knife) 3. Pocket knife (same reasons as $2 knife but more expensive with little gadgets)
Sorry it was so long I just happen to have a "thing" for weapons. Please update question when you've decided on your choice. I'd love to know
ask a mail man they carry dog mace with them not much effective as bear mace but usefull since it still hurts alot. ask your mail man if you can have one or if he can sell you one
I am not sure exactly where to buy mace, but maybe go to walmart and if they don't have any ask them if they know any places. The police office would probably know where you could purchase some. Another substitute for mace would be red pepper( AKA cheyenne). You can get it in small containers and throw that in people's eyes. It would hurt as much(if not more)than mace.
LOL. No offence but I wouldn't buy a mace. I know what you mean though, I'm the same and I live in a pretty rough neighbourhood. at the most carry a knife and a small bottle of dishwashing liquid to squirt in someones eyes if you really need it. And think about it- a mace would be heavy and hard to carry around and you'd probably hurt yourself with it.
I don't know, a real mace would be intimidating. I don't think a Viking would be likely to get attacked at the ATM. Plus a real mace may have the added benefit of not being covered by local laws...
