I honestly gave Twilight a fair chance because everyone seemed to like it, and I figured "hey if people who don't even like to read are reading these books then it must be worth something." Then I actually sat through all four books, and felt like I wasted a month of my life I could never get back. I'll admit this much...Twilight is addicting. However, it's not very good, and then I pretty much figured that people (from my experience, I'm not generalizing here) who like these books so much figure it's a masterpiece because they don't read much and therefore don't know what a real "good book" looks like. I didn't see Bella and Edward's relationship as true love at all for the simple fact that Bella just sees Edward as this hot, amazing, mysterious Adonis. She becomes obsessed with him but everyone squeals that it's love instead of shallowness. Not to mention the fact that the creepy things Edward does (i.e. watching Bella while she sleeps and insulting her ability to take care of herself) are dismissed as romantic instead of just plain weird like people would normally see them in our society. Basically this story's just been told before vampires are always falling in love with humans and then wanting to protect them...making a vampire, sparkle and feel like granite doesn't make it creative, it's just weird in my eyes. I wouldn't want a boyfriend/husband who feels like a rock no matter how hot he is. It seems to me that's really the only reason people like it because "omg Edward Cullen is the hottest thing to walk the face of the earth omg, omg, omgggggg!" Um...ok? I get it though...everyone likes a romance (no matter how creepy and obsessive it is (Romeo & Juliet anyone?)) So really what is this obsession with these books? There must be some kind of drug that my body is immune to in them, because I just don't see the appeal. Sorry I rambled, but what do you guys think? Am I the only person who feels this way?
It actually makes me mad that some people will love a book just because they idolize some guy they think is 'perfect'. A hot guy doesn't make a good book or a good movie. It just makes him a hot guy.
The romance is probably the corniest, cheesiest Sh-- I have ever seen. in a bad way. cause it tries to be serious. I mean if was tryign to be funny, that's ok, but serious romance? god give me a break. The characters aren't that interesting at all, I can think of characters from other books that are far more interesting and in deph. For example, the character Ender Wiggins from the ender series is an extremely in deph character who's psyche is extremely developed. even through just one book he's an extremely interesting character.
It's just overhyped, a fad. fans really only like it cause they think edward is like teh epiphany of hotness. great. a guy who's like a rock and who's sooo mysterious. no offense, but I'd want my boyfriend to be human, to be more sentimental, show emotion. and not snoop aroundwatching me while I sleep.
i could go on forever but I'm not gonna... ranted to many times about this
glad to hear one girl doesn't like it, it was a movie made to fufill those who think something exists, fantasies, but we know vampires don't exist, and that you can't fall in love with one, theyll just use you for your blood anyway
For many I think it is because they are not exposed to much good literature and are therefore not very discerning. Plus I think the cheesy romance flavor of the book appeals to a lot of girls.
I have thought and thought and thought on that subject, trying to come up with a theory as to why everyone loves those books and the only thing I have come up with is what most of the other answers stated. In simple:they think the dude is hot and like the fact that he is a 'soft, sweet vampire'.Yuck! Do you even know how many times that story line has been written?A lot.Stephanie Meyers just threw in some sparkly fairy dust(seriously the whole sparkling thing made me laugh my a-- off) and corny romance and presto! A new teen sensation. In comparison to great writers like Steven King...well, she she get the sparkling sh-- slapped out of her.
Althought I totally agree with you about the whole edward is a creep thing, because it is totally true, but I really liked the books. I thought It was a good story, maybe slightly cheesy, but that's why it's FICTION. No need to hate the books because it's not how real life would be, it's a frickin story for crying out loud. If you don't like it, then you don't like it, but lots of people do. You can voice your opinion about it, but don't assume that you know why other people like it. People might have very different reasons. No need to judge.

Lol I felt the same way...I thought Meyerpires were too pansy. I like badass vampires who are mean and heartless lol. REAL vampires don't sparkle. I wouldn't be scared of Meyerpires at all. Seriously what's Edward gonna do, throw glitter at me? - 8 months ago
i definitely love the books but I can see that they aren't that great. the story line is so common and is definitely very cheesy. it doesn't take a genius to come up with the idea for that story.
i personally loved twilight.because it was somewhat different, than the typical ee,he meets her, they fight and fall in love thing. this guy has serious issues..he is a freakin vampire..also,he is well, direct in a way we would all love guys to be.he doesn't deny Bella the confidence that he is in love with her,and no one would possible love her more. as far as hert aking care of herself is concerned..we all saw how that turned out in the second book..she is almost dead. also,i like the weird weird fact that her best friend os a werewolf...the matter of fact way in which all these fantastical myths are used is amazing. obviously there are a lot of other "good" books out there, and I have read some of them..hel,i am doing major in english literature, but I think its a piece of good literature as well.
its not always content which makes a good literature.its "Addictive",that is precisely because its a piece of gr8 wirting.:)
i thought about this too and I didn't really get it either i think people (girls) really like it because they just like the idea of it, and the way edward acts. I'm sure in real life they would all hate bella because she got edward insted of them, they put themselve sin bellas shoes. but ya I don't get how they all of a sudden love each other, makes absolutely no sense at all, poor writing I guess im posting anonymous cause I don't want to die
I would have to say also, it is the whole I understand Bella ans can understand her. The whole Edward always watching her sleep did creep me out. lol, but hell everyone's version of romantic can be different. I talk in my sleep too, so I wouldn't want someone listening to me sleep. lol
lol. Its not so much that theyre amazing, but they do have their own upside. I enjoyed them, but I will say that there are better books out there. A lot of teenage girls love the books because they see themselves as very similar to Bella. Because they identify with her, they can get more into the story, and feel the way she feels. But then, they get unrealistic ideas about what a guy should do for her, and what he should be like. Its not shallowness to connect with someone on an emotional level. Its just something that happens. Have you ever been in a relationship, where it seemed that you and your significant other were on the same level? That's what she's talking about. And to Bella, it wasnt about his looks, his body, or even the fact that Edward is a vampire, it was that she had that connection, and he made her feel safe and happy. Its just the book obsessees who talk about how hot he is. The movie didn't help too much either. That one was rather disappointing.
Edward is the fantasy most girls have- the perfect guy. Honestly, a big part of the reason I read it is because I couldn't wait to see the next sweet or romantic thing he did next, because every time I read something like that I absolutely melted. My favorite was when he wrote her her own lullaby and sang her to sleep. To me that sounds so peaceful and romantic, it almost turns girls on. Now I don't know about you, but I don't know any guy who would do that.
Exactly I don't know any guy who would do that either, so my whole thing is...why would Meyer give girls a false sense of what love is supposed to be? My mom read the books and told me any girl who believed this is what love is about, is in for a long lonely life, and she's been with my dad since they were 16 (they're both 45 now) I don't know maybe I just feel like that's not what it's about. - 9 months ago
Personally I have all the books, and I've read them all a few times haha. But you're right, looking at it critically, it's not very well-written. It's not complex, not very hard to understand at all, and the characters don't have very much depth. But it is addicting, maybe because it's so easy. It just appeals to the general public; a romance story, especially one that's easy to understand, tends to get a lot of followers. Girls just put themselves in Bella's shoes, and reading it from that perspective is what pulls people in, I think. I'm personally happy with almost any books that get people reading, like Harry Potter did and all (except Gossip Girl, that's one I completely can't stand lol). Twilight is pretty much a guilty pleasure for me. I find it entertaining, not so much enriching. There are definitely better books though :]
The first time I read that series, I was enthralled. maybe six months later, I went to start reading the first one again, and I got to page three and had to close it because it was so awful. so I think you have to be in a certain mindset when you're reading them. put all your knowledge of what makes a good story in the back of your mind and stick in in a drawer and just pretend like you're bella and just buy into it. they're not written well...it sucks. but we love them anyway. no one gives a shit about bella, it's just that the reader puts their name and face into the story and it makes it cool. I think that's why we like it. OR they sprinkle addictive drugs into the books during publication or whatever so we breathe them in like anthrax and it makes us loooove the books. for me though, I didn't really know what good literature was at the time I was reading the series the first time around. then I got more mature and more critical and could tell the difference. they're good though. entertaining, and the reader does connect with them at least. bella is just the worst protagonist ever.
ah I was so against reading that book. I just don't like books like that I would much rather read something more educational honestly. but my management teacher is making us read it! I have no idea what it has to do with the class :/ I am super pissed off!
Don't feel bad...I had to read the first book for English and write a review for it. I ended up getting a C because my teacher said it wasn't right to call a book "pop culture junk made for dim witted teenage girls" - 9 months ago

I have no idea. I won't waste time (or money) to read the book or see the movie.
My friends literally dragged me to see the movie, and I was laughing the whole time. It was unbelievably bad and corny. - 9 months ago

I had to hear about it from a bunch of underclassmen at lunch everyday for the last part of the semester. I wanted to bust my ear drums. I was glad when the semester ended.
Well, it's good to laugh; so at least you got something out of it... lol - 9 months ago
