I was planning on telling this guy I liked him on a trip our classes went on. It was about a week to DC, but we never were in the same group so I didn't see him the whole time. Anyway, when I got back I found out that someone had told his best friend who I liked. Of course his best friend told him I like him. Did I ruin my chances with him? I wanted to tell him myself, but someone beat me to it.
Actually, it doesn't matter who tells him first. Rather, it is who he prefers. In fact, he'll be rather glad to know someone has fallen for him! Do something that pleases him (find out) but don't go over the board and tease him in front of many people because that MIGHT turn him off (differs from guys to guys)

Wow the same thing happened to me lol. You didn't ruin your chances, it just makes things a little harder for you. I remember when this happened to me, I tried to talk to the guy anyway, but it was nerve wracking because he already knew and thought I was only talking to him because I liked him (which was kinda true but he wasn't supposed to know that lol), but even though things didn't work out (because he liked someone else), we're still pretty good friends to this day. I would just say to have a casual conversation with him and if he asks if you like him, then you can reply yes. Don't rush things and see what happens, you might end up getting a great friend :)
Of course you didn't ruin you chances with him you can either act like you don't know that someone told him and still let him know. or you can see if he makes a move on that. He might just move on it and then you would know he liked you as well.
