Nothing. If you're a smart girl(which you appear to be), then you probably like decent gentlemen. The worst case scenario is that he will say he's not interested. Go for it asap.

You are feeling the same irrational fear that many guys feel before asking a girl out. there isn't always a way to explain it, but sometimes the fear is just there.
Nothing if you don't let it. We can't control who we are attracted to. But we take it so personal sometimes. I can't control whether I like chocolate or green beans. Either I do or I don't. There are going to be guys that you are attracted to that don't like you, and there are going to be guys that are attracted to you and you don't like them. That's life. Don't take it personal, realize there are other guys, and there are no consequences for you.
Well unless he's a serial killer, or has a crazy jealous girlfriend in a violent latino street gang. Don't worry, you will be fine. Just slow down and work up to your real feelings. Engage your senses here feel it out. And take it slow. And remain confident.
Personally opening up is something that I tend to do, and I mean the worst that could happen is that he isn't interested. But I think you should go for it. If you don't then you won't know if there could have been something between you guys. And in the case that he's not interested. Well you can be friends and maybe later on he will become interested. And there's always more fish in the sea =]
