My girlfriend has developed a drinking problem due to depression. She has been prescribed medication to take for her depression, but will not take it cause she has to stop drinking to do so. We have talked about rehab, but those places are too easy to just walk out of .
As a man that truly loves her, what can I to help her?

You have to get her to take the pills to get the depression to stop. That means you have to find a way of stopping her from drinking. If you can't convince her, try to get her to see a counsellor. Make sure to explain to her how important this is for your relationship.

But if none of this works, then realize that you cannot stop her from drinking. She needs to stop herself from drinking. This is not something you can make her do.

It is so hard being with someone who drinks too much. I think you should consider whether you really want to keep dealing with this.

My advice is that you tell her the relationship is over unless she stops drinking and goes to treatment with Alcoholics Anonymous *and* medical treatment.

You can't do anything to help her. I don't mean to sound cruel about it. I only mean to state a fact. The help she gets, or does not get, is 100% her decision. I'm the only lifelong sober person in an immediate and extended family full of addicts, so I have a fair amount of experience with that lifestyle and how it affects people. And one of the first lessons I learned was to disengage from people who are not in treatment. I don't mean *willing* to contemplate the possibility of considering treatment in the future ... I mean in treatment *today*.

So my advice is that you tell her the relationship's over if she doesn't go into treatment *today*. Don't debate, don't discuss. Tell her, then step back and leave the decision in her hands.

Good luck.

well, first off maybe you should look at yourself and see how much of a help you are really being... (your avatar has you with a bottle in hand). Do you really care about her drinking problem enough to stop what you are doing and work on it together?
