He may think he loves you based on the definition of love that he has been taught. However, the true test is whether he loves you according to the true definition of love. Realistically, if he is able to be mean to you, something is skewed in his definition. Read 1John and see if he fits into the parameters given there. Remember, Jesus lived the definition of love on earth. He lived a life without taking, or proving authority, knowing who He is and why He was here and helping others by seeking out needs and meeting them. As He met needs, things happened that changed the lives of the people He helped, without force, coersion, deceit or other respect and authority eroding behaviors. "Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends" (1Corinthians 13:4-8a). You are a precious creation of the Most High King. You should be treated like the precious, wonderful princess you are made to be. Don't settle for someone who is willing to treat you otherwise, even part of the time. God loves, adores and respects you, let Him teach you what love really is.
