Some possible hints you could do include: asking to go for coffee or lunch, touching him while you guys are talking, etc. But I think if you are shy, you may be more nervous around him than usual, and that itself can be a hint as well. Hints are not always clear so you may want to figure why you don't want to tell him?
well, if you ask me, I do not know how to pick up "hints". so guess they may be specific to the person you are interacting with, how he perceives the hints, what actions he considers as "hints" etc I guess
