Why did he ask me to be his girlfriend if we haven't been on a date?

I met this guy a couple of months ago when I was out with my friends. He was really nice and we talked all night at the bar. After that we started texting often and we both decided we were interested in each other. He lives really far away now but is moving soon relatively close to where I live. Just recently he asked if I wanted to be his girlfriend, but I am apprehensive because although I really like him we have yet to go on an official date. What is going on? I feel guilty but I think that something might be wrong with him because we haven't been on an official date and he has already asked me to be his girlfriend. Does he just genuinely like me, or is there some underlying motive to this?
