Well spending time with him a lot isn't necessarily clingy. My girlfriend and I can spend 24/7 with each other for a extended time period and we aren't so clingy. 8 months is a long time, I suggest you just talk to him and tell him how you feel about not spending time with him. Just inform him about how you want to spend time with him, He won't look at is as clingy. Actually if a girl told a guy that I would think the guy would take it more as a compliment because someone actually wants to spend time with them.

Basically, next time you see him, open up about how you feel about this topic and get him to understand. You two should be able to work out something, so you won't be classified as clingy but you'll get to see your boyfriend more.
