Does attractiveness play a role in making friends?

In general, do attractive girls/ boys make more friends than those deemed average or below average? Or is it the personality?
Do guys only want to be friends with attractive girls? It seems like guys are more picky in terms of looks when it comes to making friends with girls... Is it true in your experiences?
I am a college student and don't have any friends and am wondering if my average looks have to do with not having any friends...
On the other hand, I see unattractive girls with tons of friends on Facebook, so maybe looks don't really play a role when making friends?
What are your opinions?

When I'm making friends I don't care how attractive they are. It's not like I'm going to date them or anything. Compatibility and if we can get along is what matters. I also don't want any douche-y or arrogant friends.

It's hard enough for me to find friends who have personalities that I like, so I'm not about to make my odds even worse by constricting it to only attractive/unattractive people, haha. But seriously, it doesn't matter to me at all.
