No, I'm serious. I've asked people before and I've got a wide range of answers. I'm just asking about any kilt, with a tank top, "wife beater," Ghille shirt, a suit/tie, or whatever. Also, it could be any type of kilt- the old fashion kind, the military kind, or made out of new materials/patterns like leather, denim, camo, whatever. And I'm not talking about just everyday wear, of course I mean special occasions. So, do think they're hot or a little weird? Please be specific. Feel free to give your honest opinion, but no snide remarks please ;)
I'm black and irish and my guy is scottish and has one. I gotta giggle when he wears it but I get it and know what it means so I don't usually give him shit about it.
From my understanding, kilts are symbolic of one's families origins, roots etc. So, if it is being worn in an occasion that reflect 'family/tradition/culture' it would very appropriate. I would not call them 'hot' or 'weird' - especially when worn on a special occasion it is a reflection of one's cultural roots. Along with some good old fashioned bag pipe music, family, and food a kilt is most appropriate. I hope that answers your question. I had a little bit of difficulty as to what you were asking in the first place (and in what context).
No, they're not really all that symbolic, they're just a piece of clothing. Its actually the individual tartan itself that is symbolic, but anyway. So, let me rephrase the question: do you think the kilt is an attractive piece of clothing on males (with respect to its origins) either physically or (as others have said) because of the psychological implications? Put it in your own context- if you think they are appropriate at a wedding but not a local football game, then just say so. - 7 months ago
Mmmm. . . I love kilts. Mainly the tartan ones. I do agree that the Utili-Kilt thing is a little weird, though. I saw a guy in Target a few weeks ago in a Utili-Kilt, and it was hard not to laugh. Kilts are for special, formal occasions. But I think they're really hot, especially if a guy has nice legs to show off! My dream wedding involves me marrying a Scottish guy who wears his clan kilt for the ceremony. *dreamy sigh* Maybe it's the Braveheart/Rob Roy thing. I don't know.
There's something about a guy who isn't afraid of wearing a kilt, of the potential feminizing thing. Cause, if you think about it, anatomically, it makes more sense for guys to wear kilts and girls to wear pants, but for some reason in a lot of cultures kilts are seen as weird. One of my favorite quotes on the subject is "Why is it called a kilt? Cause we done kilt everyone who called it a skirt! " :)
Hey that's awesome. I'm glad to hear that the stereotypes haven't put us all in boxes yet! I was just wondering because I play the pipes, and didn't want to spend a bunch of money on something people were going to take wrong. And yeah I argree- the utili/practikilts are pretty lame, at least so far as I've seen.
Just as an aside: what exactly would be "nice legs" on a guy?
Thanks 4 the answer too ;) - 7 months ago

It's hard to say exactly what that would be. I define "nice legs" in the same way a certain Supreme Court justice defined obscenity: "I'll know it when it see it! " ;) - 7 months ago
Heh. I have friends who wear kilts. One of the guys is actually Scottish, and has both his tartan formal kilt and 2 or 3 utility kilts. He really seems to like them. The other friend (these two don't know each other) is actually Saudi Arabian and wears a utility kilt.
Mostly, I'm just impressed that they actually do it. It says a lot about their confidence in their manliness. Or something like that. - 7 months ago

Hmm. Why would a Saudi wear a kilt? :O - 7 months ago
