A friend of mine always compares his tan skin to my fair skin. My girl friend says that it's a dominance thing, because guys feel their the dominate ones when they have darker skin. What's the deal?

Update: yeah I wasn't too convinced when she told me that, but she insisited that's the truth, so I just thought I'd see if anyone else had the same opinion as her.    9 months ago

I really don't care about how light or dark her skin is. The only time I do care, is when her skin is freakishly dark or freakishly pale.

I've never heard of that. I'm black I don't feel dominant over people because they have a lighter skin tone than me.

That sucks for me then...lol. On a serious note it is definitely not a dominance thing. Different people prefer different shades of people. I for one could care a less about something so trivial as how tan someone is.

It all comes down to preference. My girlfriend has really light skin, almost like porcelain, and I couldn't be happier. As for me, no, I couldn't care less about having a tan.

I can see where he's coming from, though. A tan usually means manual labour, and that means using your body/muscles to make a living. In today's world, muscles are all the rage, so it's seen as a positive.Around the time of the industrial revolution, light skin was the way to go - it meant that you were wealthy and didn't have to rely on physical labour to remain so. A tanned man was seen as a "brute", as it were.

So yeah, your friend is half right, but in the end it's really just a false confidence!

back in the day (and I'm talking the time when pharaos were still around), supposedly the lighter your skin the higher up in society you were. if you were female light skin was a sort of beauty standard. for men, it was a sort of standard to be dark but in the sense that they were darker than women. but if you were really dark it could have been a social indicator of low (or that you were out working in the sun all day).

this is shit I learned in school...

People where I'm from only compare tans when someones either been on holiday or been on a sunbed lol and whether its a guy or girl we don't like it when people have better tans than us-we get jealous lol. My guy friend is always bragging about how tanned he is after he's been on a sunbed and I get soo jealous. So to answer your question yes some guys like having darker skin but so do girls-its like a competition. I think that's just because we don't live in a hot place where everyone always has a tan so it'd prob be different if we lived somewhere where it was actually sunny once in a while lol.

Not all guys. I know a lot of light skinned guys who prefer dark skinned girls.

Skin pigmentation is genetic, not optional. I can't see how darker skin would show dominance, especially all you have to do to achieve it is to go outside. Or go to a tanning salon. Or have dark skinned parents. Nothing dominate about that.

Maybe he just wants to show off his tan - and compared to your fair skin, it makes him look darker.
