I know a lot of guys who are anti-braids. I understand that guys like it when a girls have their hair down and free flowing (well not really because I don't understand why something like that even matters to them, especially when they claim they don't notice small details), but what makes braids any different than a girl having her hair in a bun or ponytail?

By braids I mean any kind. It could.be french braid, fishtail, individual braids that you sometimes see on black girls, cornrows, the two pocahontas braids, a single Lara Croft braid, etc.

I don't have a problem with braids at all...i understand the practicality of them. Braids can look cute when done well.

Certain styles, and I like the smaller braids more. Not so much large ones.

While I *do* like loose hair, I'm completely fine with braids. Braids can look nice and they are practical at times.

What I don't like are buns and most "up" hairstyles. I'm also not a fan of very short hair on (the vast majority of) girls. A few girls can pull off short Euro-style cuts, but even they would look better with longer hair.

Braids and ponytails are totally fine with me, though.

I love it. It means that the girl is making and effort and taking pride in her appearance and as an added bonus, it gives me something to hold on to.

Having said that, I don't like waiting for girls to braid their hair while we're running late for a movie or something.

It's a small aesthetic matter. When hair is let loose, hair will frame the face, which makes the general shape of the head look smoother; rounder. Now taking into account that smoothness tends to be a feminine quality, (by smoothness I mean the smooth transitions of different body parts as opposed to the ruggedness males are normally attributed), we can apply that to hair as well. Straight and wavy hair is preferred among guys. Curly hair is usually only widely accepted only when it's not natural, and frizzy hair is normally looked down on. The reason for this is due to the hair seeming less feminine. It looses the smooth transitions guys look for, if only subconsciously. Now, braids, one could argue, that braids do have a smoothness to them, but it doesn't change the rougher look that it does have. It loses it's feminine quality and appeals less. This is because the braid is essentially in a knot (though not technically).

Now for my own personal opinion. I don't mind certain braids, but in my experience, the less hair used for the braid, and the more amount of braids there are, the less attractive it looks.

In the end, it comes down to preference. What I told you above was, respectively, the general social view, and my opinion. This in no way is applied to every guy as there are many that prefer braids and/or curly/frizzy hair than the generally accepted wavy or straight.

Hair cannot be frizzy if not for the individual strands. The strands are what makes the hair look frizzy or sleek.

No you are going on and on about frizziness and it has very little if anything at all to do with this question.

I defined style in that previous post to avoid confusion. I wasn't talking about style in that manner of speaking, but rather how it is defined. Texture is apparent to each individual strand of hair. Not the set of hair. Frizzy is a quality that can only appear in a set of hair, not the strand, thus it is not a texture. As for your actual question. If you cannot understand association as referenced in sociology, I cannot answer your question. I apologize and hope someone can answer your question

A style is something that is intentional. A texture is not necessarily intentional. Curly, straight, frizzy, wavy, kinky, those are textures of hair. You cannot seem to separate hair texture from hair style. Again, in this question frizzy is irrelevant. I am asking about braids.

First of all, I admit, calling frizzy a shape was a mistake, but it still is not a texture. Hair maintains its texture, unless altered (by burning it, or putting chemicals in it). Frizzy is indeed a style of hair, but not an intentional one (not commonly at least) style being defined as a distinctive quality, form, or type of something. As for the rest of you statements, it seems you cannot grasp the concept of association. Tell me. Why is it girls prefer taller guys? Maybe that will help.

A tangle of cables is different than a smooth and organized pattern. That's like saying this link is the same as this link

Circle, triangle, square, those are shapes. Frizzy is not a shape because frizzy can come in all shapes. Look up frizzy in the dictionary please. Either way frizzy is irrelevant because this question is about braids.

The reason why a rope looks rougher than a string is because of the size and texture. A rope is made out of a rougher and stiffer material than a string.

A braid can be rough but it can also be smooth.

Although this applies to societies, not individuals, thus opinions will deffer and my statement will not apply to everybody.

So although braids may not be disorderly in its physical nature, it is in the interpretation the human mind has a tenancy toward. Since it does contain interloping strands, that if applied to, per say cables of electronics, would be considered disorderly. And you could say they are two different things, but the fact remains that people make associations to unlike things naturally (like I said about my darkness to fear example)

Although, like I originally said, opinions differ. What I am stating is a general social view on the appearance of hair. If you have a different opinion on the matter that is all well and dandy, I am simply telling you what I know from my research of social behavior in reference to both sociology and Psychology, which is how specific qualities provoke specific thoughts. Much like to how darkness is associated with fear despite there being no actual connection between the two.

this is due to the ability to see how the rope is structured. It looks rougher than the string because it has said visible structure. This is despite both being constructed in the same way. Doesn't matter what can happen with straight hair, it remains clear that it, in proper care, appears neater.

Frizzy is not a texture, it is also a shape. Hair maintains its texture unless you effect it with hair products. But your point got through, comparing a state of hair is not the same as comparing a style of hair. Unfortunately it seems my point evades you. "waves are bumpy too", yes, but there is a smooth transition to them (usually), As for braids... imagine a string. Now imagine a rope. Which looks more disorderly? Obviously the rope.

      Waves are bumpy too.
You can't use frizzy as an example because frizzy isn't the same as braids. Braids are a hair style and frizzy is a hair texture. If anything braids are orderly, similar to a bun. The hair is confined and organized, where as loose hair is free and easier to get messy and tangled.

I'm sorry. Not texture. I meant shape.

I was using frizzy hair as an example of disorderly hair and how it loses its femininity. I was stating that the physical quality that braids have, in other words three parts of hair being interloped with one-another, does not maintain the smoothness that straight hair has. Run your fingers over a flat smooth surface and than a bumpy smooth surface, it feels and looks more rugged with the bumpy surface. It doesn't matter if men don't wear braids as often, it still loses its femininity in texture

Braids are tame, I don't see how they're considered rugged. I women are more likely to have braids than men. Plus I never said the hair had to be frizzy. Your hair doesn't have to be frizzy to achieve a braid. A braid isn't any more a knot than a bun is.

I don't like hair loose on a woman, I guess it is the sex thing. I hate her hair in my face. So on all women I love hair pulled back, braids or very short. Some women look good bald.

In business I like a woman's hair the same way, not long on the side.

Personally I like to wear a braided ponytail but nothing close to cornrows or extensions. They remind me of dreadlocks and I hate to see those, especially when they get all matted up.
