Is there a difference between dating and being in a relationship?

Some people say dating is casual and you can date more than one person until you find the one you want to be in a relationship with, some say dating is only with one person? Is there a difference between the two?

  • Well, there's two different common usages of the word "dating".

Sometimes "dating" is used to say that you're currently unattached and looking. It means that you're going out on dates with people.

But it's also used to say that you're currently pursuing or getting to know someone specific, "We're dating" means that you're going out on dates with this person, but you haven't made things "exclusive" yet.

Often people are "dating" someone exclusively but just haven't had the "are we in a relationship" talk yet. A relationship is exclusive, you've agreed that you're only seeing each other. Dating does not have that exclusivity.

  • There is a difference, dating is a trial process with the intent to build on a pre-existing bond or to establish on, a relationship has already a bond established.

  • In my mind no, tho I am forever single and that may not match the common popular stance of others
