Why is it easier to not responded instead of giving the real reason?

I'm guilty of this myself numerous times and have had the same thing happen to me. So why is it easier to just suddenly stop texting or responding to a person you've been texting and then all of the suddenly instead of explaining the reason you don't want to see them anymore you just stop talking to them. Its a pretty crummy feeling so why is everybody guilty of this? Is it easier than confronting the person head on or no responding should be a sign that the person is not interested anymore?
