Is this a date, or am I friend zoned?

This guy I met online keeps telling me where he's going. I'm not sure if he's trying to see if I'm interested, like he's expecting me to invite myself to tag along or something. A couple times, he's said something along the lines of, let him know if I see an event that looks interesting--"we can meet up." Finally, I suggested somewhere I was thinking of going. Again, he said to let him know, and "we can meet up." This is far from the typical date request. What gives? Is he wanting to hang out as a friend? Or is this meant as a date, and he's trying to avoid potential embarassment? A couple more mixed messages here--he messages me hi with exclamation points like he's excited to talk to me, but then when I finally said that he'd done something cute, he just went silent. Ugh.

Updates:
Okay, so we're meeting somewhere during the day tomorrow. We'll see...
