Can a cell phone delete text messages on its own?

its not a new cell phone but an older one, maybe3 years old.

I didn't know it was possible but my friend said his phone deleted a lot of his text messaging history

Updates:
or after a few months do they just delete themselves

  • My last phone would only hold 50 messages, it would delete any older ones to make room for newer ones.

  • My smart phone will only retain 200 messages per contact. So yes. I don't know if that answers your question, though.

  • Yeah, if it reaches a limit of some sort.

  • I'm guessing it deletes old messages to give space for new ones. It prob has a capacity of messages it can display. Maybe go into settings and check how many texts it will store at a time.
